How Many Points Would Gretzky Have In Today's Game?

My 2 cents.

The players are significantly faster and stronger than the 1980's.

Not to mention the goalies today look like the Michelin Man.

In most sports that are measured, you can see the difference in the decades. For example, Usain Bolt would crush the runners of the 1980's. He's almost a full second faster than some.

Some people say Gretzky would light up today's game.

I tend to think the opposite.

I think Wayne is one of only a handful of the players from the 1980's who could still play today. He was that good.

Gretzky himself has said he could not put up the same records in this era.

I personally think Wayne would be right up there among the league leaders.

If we could only invent a time machine...

Wayne would have a unthinkable amount of points today just like when he did. Would he have scored 200? Prob not, but he would of been beating the next best by 30 or 40 points every year.

In 2002/2003 38 year old Mario Lemieux scored 91 points in 67 games, a PPG ratio of 1.38. Goals per game that year averaged 5.14. He was coming off a broken back and cancer.

In 2016-2017, a prime 29 year old Crosby scored 89 points in 75 games, a PPG ratio of 1.18. Goals per game this past season was 5.45

Seeing as a broken down 38 year old Lemieux could outscore a prime Sidney Crosby in a lower scoring era, I think Gretzky would do just fine in today's game

Good point Homer

He as he was, is not built for today's hockey.

His skills and genius hockey mind would be fine in todays game. Those guys can always play, if you watched him on a regular basis you wouldn't doubt that, and I am assuming in the 80s in sweden you didn't.

Something over a hundred points

True on this parts, but you will not be a elite player looking like he did in today's hockey. He would have had modern conditioning to be elite.

37 year old Gretzky had 90 points in the 97-98 season; tied for third in the league with all the clutching and grabbing that went on. So yeah, he'd be just fine in today's game. Since today's league leaders will threaten but maybe not pass 100 points, I'll say Gretzky would get around 115 in a season.

He would get lots of points just on his passing alone, but of course his conditioning would be another level if he played today, that is the game today, why wouldn't he have great conditioning today? Every player today knows they need it and they work to get it. He had a great work ethic as a player so one can only assume he would work to get it.

It's the things that you can't really teach that he had in spades along with that modern conditioning that would make him a star today. Forget 200 points but I am quite confident in some number between 100-120.

Wayne Gretzky 6'0 185
Patrick Kane 5'11 175

Patrick Kane scored 106 points in 2015-2016, 89 this year. Are the people saying Gretzky would only score 90-100 in today's game seriously arguing that Wayne Gretzky is not as good of a hockey player as Patrick Kane? This board sometimes.

Obviously Wayne is the greatest ever.

How would he do in a season of today's game?

Gretzky is the greatest of all time.
Just take % lead over his 2nd place Art Ross finisher and add the points to modern player who won the scoring lead.

Lemieux was on pace for 145 points in 2000-2001. Imagine a healthier Lemieux. Could have gotten 150-160.

Without stats calculating, I'd guess Gretzky to get at least 120 in a off year. Prob 135-150.

I'd imagine something like 35 goals 100 assists would not be out of the question for Gretz

There it is, are we talking about Gretzky or a hypothetical modern day Gretzky? If one teleported him to current time I can not see him doing very well, still decent on skill alone though. If he happened to be born appr. 25 years ago and active today, with current training it is another thing.

The one thing people usually don't take into account when hypothesizing how well a player would do in a different era is that the player would definitely be working out at the same level with the same training as players in the era moved to.

Gretzky would be training harder, using better technology and knowledge now than he would've been in the 80s.

Add 10-15 lbs, an extra step to prime Gretzky when thinking how well he would do today. If you do that, I think he still crushes the league.
