In 2002/2003 38 year old Mario Lemieux scored 91 points in 67 games, a PPG ratio of 1.38. Goals per game that year averaged 5.14. He was coming off a broken back and cancer.
In 2016-2017, a prime 29 year old Crosby scored 89 points in 75 games, a PPG ratio of 1.18. Goals per game this past season was 5.45
Seeing as a broken down 38 year old Lemieux could outscore a prime Sidney Crosby in a lower scoring era, I think Gretzky would do just fine in today's game
Lemieux would be better than Gretzky in today's NHL
First post and already off topic.......nicely done.![]()
He as he was, is not built for today's hockey.
His skills and genius hockey mind would be fine in todays game. Those guys can always play, if you watched him on a regular basis you wouldn't doubt that, and I am assuming in the 80s in sweden you didn't.
Something over a hundred points
True on this parts, but you will not be a elite player looking like he did in today's hockey. He would have had modern conditioning to be elite.

Obviously Wayne is the greatest ever.
How would he do in a season of today's game?
He would get lots of points just on his passing alone, but of course his conditioning would be another level if he played today, that is the game today, why wouldn't he have great conditioning today? Every player today knows they need it and they work to get it. He had a great work ethic as a player so one can only assume he would work to get it.
It's the things that you can't really teach that he had in spades along with that modern conditioning that would make him a star today. Forget 200 points but I am quite confident in some number between 100-120.
My 2 cents.
The players are significantly faster and stronger than the 1980's.
Not to mention the goalies today look like the Michelin Man.
In most sports that are measured, you can see the difference in the decades. For example, Usain Bolt would crush the runners of the 1980's. He's almost a full second faster than some.
Some people say Gretzky would light up today's game.
I tend to think the opposite.
I think Wayne is one of only a handful of the players from the 1980's who could still play today. He was that good.
Gretzky himself has said he could not put up the same records in this era.
I personally think Wayne would be right up there among the league leaders.
If we could only invent a time machine...
