It will get harder for him to hit 50 goals with the games he's missing.
With the announcement he's missing tomorrow the Leafs will only have 63 games left.

He needs 45 to hit 50. 45 in 63 is a 58 goal pace, very doable for Matthews.

He needs 55 to hit 60. 55 in 63 is a 72 goal pace, which is unlikely.

I guess it really depends when he's back and if he comes back 100%. If he misses too much more time hitting 50 will become unlikely even if he's back healthy.

It’s kind of crazy to think if he can’t get healthy soon he might finish this year with still only two 50 goal scoring seasons 9 years into his career, despite likely being over 400 goals. It’s amazing how easily a couple injuries and shortened seasons can impact these things.

It really hammers home just how unique Ovechkin is. Guy played a more physical game than Matthews but hardly missed anytime because of injuries. Then of course there’s the longevity thing which really separates him from a lot of the elite goal scorers whose goals declined significantly as they got older.

Yea that’s what I was thinking about. I’d say Matthews, Stamkos and Kovalchuk are the three most talented goalscorers other than Ovechkin to enter the league in the 2000s and combined they have 2/3rds of the 50 goal seasons that Ovechkin does. Ovechkin and Draisaitl are the only 2 players to enter the league since 93-94 with more than 2 50-goal seasons and Draisaitl has 3 and Ovechkin has 9. It’s just crazy.

At this point he will have to go on a 60 goal pace when he returns in order to hit 51.

When is he returning?

That’s absolutely insane.

Matthews has not played this season, and he is currently not playing.

The guy has won 3 Rockets and currently has won back to back Rockets.

That's 46 goals in 60 games left.

I don't see that happening this season.

He’s certainly capable of this but is he even playing the remaining 60 games? In each of the past 4 seasons he has less than 60 games stretches with 40+ goals except the season he played injured all year.

Yeah it seems unlikely he’ll return and be perfectly healthy the rest of the way, which is likely what it would take to hit 50.

Have they even given much insight on what exactly is going on? I’ve just heard he went to Germany earlier but not much else
