how long do you think it is until wang spend money and throws around contracts like he was 11 years ago?

i think this offseason the isles get significantly better because I'm still expecting playoffs this season and i think he opens up his wallet in response to that

11 years ago he had a team payroll of 40M(which made us middle of the pack) but it seems like that is the most he will spend

11 years ago he let milbury acquire yashin and sign him to his ridiculous contract and also let him acquire mike peca and sign him to a contract, idr how much that was for though

If it is true what they say about the organizations young talent then I would throw this shortened season away, supplement the talent that jumps to the NHL level next season with one or two strong FA's and then really build the team for the first year in Brooklyn.

From a business standpoint, IMHO, this seems to be a sensible plan.

The actual build will start now, but the superstar signings won't happen till the season before we leave or the season of. He's gonna give Nassau country nothing..absolutely nothing..then produce a killer team in Brooklyn...payback really...this team will suck until we leave out of spite.

One we are in Brooklyn, we WILL be a real team..no more laughing stock and we WILL beat the Ranjerks on a regular basis..

And those two guys were the biggest reason the team went from league doormat to 96 points and fifth place in the span of a year. Not to mention making the playoffs the two years after. Did it result in ultimate success? No... but it's a lot more than could be said about the team in recent years. Imagine that... playoffs three years in a row and 4 years out of 5. As a fan now it's something you can't even fathom.

Depends on when we get to play in Brooklyn and how well the team does this year. We may be a buyer come the deadline (especially if teams like Philly and Detroit keep loosing and are out of the playoffs). We could be ripe for acquiring some decent talent.

Offseason after this one at the latest would be my optimistic guess.

Worst case is Wang thinks the rebuild is on pace from within and only "green-lights" the sort of small-scale, low risk/high reward moves we've seen.

Best case scenario is a "changing of the guard" somewhere between Philadelphia's high-speed restructuring and Ottawa's.

I think it'll be somewhere in between.

We have have "young budding Talent" for a few years now. IMO the time for the bigger fish has come. However the $$$ to make that happen has not been there for Garth to do these things. I dont think Wang will keep the team for much longer once he get out of LI.
I also do not think he will put to much Cash into the team at all. I think he will look to sell once they move. Leave the roster on the cheap side for a quick sell. Let the new owner put some cash into getting the team better.

It depends on when he thinks he will get a return on the investment.

The Isles have not been close enough recently to get into the playoffs without signing multiple players to big contracts. Once the Isles are close enough that one or two key players can put them in, it will make financial sense for Wang to add the players.

I think Snow has been partly honest when he says that he has money available to spend...if the addition would make the Isles a playoff team. I don't think Wang wants to spend the money to move from 13th to 10th in the conference.

Wang isn't stupid. He will spend more when it will be to his benefit to spend more.

I was thinking that as well. I still think he might sell.

There is no one addition that would make the Isles a playoff team. This line of thinking is completely flawed. You need to start somewhere. If you sign one guy, you go from 15th to 12th (figuratively speaking). Another guy... you go from 12th to 9th. THEN you make one more addition to get you into the playoffs. You don't spend zero and then sign one player to get you in. One player won't get you from 15th to 7th/8th. There needs to be a steady steam of spending.... unless you want to make a splash all at once and get 4 players by July 3rd one summer (we all know this won't happen).

Wang won't sell. He is too in-bed with the NHL...well, he might to avoid conflict of interest as he owns Neulion...but not sure if that is considered conflict or not. He will sell once the Isles become a winning team. Selling now makes no sense. The team is valued at MUCH lower than he bought it for and he wants a profit, not a loss. Solidify the lease (which he did), build a winning team, then sell. THAT makes perfect business sense.

If you sign the right guy, he becomes a magnet for other free agents. Mets did this with Pedro Martinez. One of the game's best signs with a seemingly hapless team. Other players take notice and wonder what's going on over there. Star tells his other star colleagues that we're doing this and this, and it's gonna be legendary, and you gotta get in on this if you can.

It does take that one player to take the plunge. I like your Pedro example.

Hopefully this offseason is the one where he actually greenlights Snow to go full bore for someone. I'd back the money truck in front of Corey Perry's house, that type of signing would be a franchise changer.

Maybe Iginla could be the NHL version of Pedro Martinez.

BTW, maybe it's just me but I don't think I'd spend too much money on a forward. I think we should be OK there once the prospects start to develop a bit. What has me worried the most is the defense and, most importantly, goaltending. Once Nabby leaves we could be in serious trouble. There might be a few good goalies available the offseason after next, but if Nabokov leaves before that I'm curious to see what Snow decides to do.

Maybe go after Hiller if Anaheim decides to give Gibson a shot? Go with one of the BP guys, who have both been pretty inconsistent? I honestly have no idea which direction they'll decide to go in.

This I agree with. But you still need to sign those other guys. This team is too far away for one guy to make a difference. But yes... start with one player and turn it into two... three... etc.

Wang will have to do a little more than throw money at the "right" free agent.

He has to get these guys into Manhattan show them around.

Then get them into Brooklyn, go to a Net's game and/or a concert at the new arena

Take them to the Gold coast on the North Shore show them his neighborhood.

And let them in on his blueprint to turning the Islanders into one of the top teams in the NHL on and off the ice.

I think that for many players their impression of the Islanders starts and stops with the NVMC the Marriott and or the Garden City hotel.

THAT guy is a hockey player. A true old school hockey player. I'd kill to have a guy like that.

That right there is a huge problem.

It's funny though... the guys that DO sign here all end up liking it. They see what the area has to offer and it completely blows away their low expectations. You would think that would spread around the league.

I think the hope is that the Isles UFA problems were due to the uncertainty of their home. Now that a deal is locked down, I see them being more attractive to free agents. Especially since they appear to have a bright future. I could see UFAs getting on board with that.

At least I hope that's the case.

Well... since the move was announced we have Vis refusing to play for us (although at his age he will never make it to Brooklyn so I guess I get that). And now we have a 20 year old prospect wanting out. The jury is still out on what exactly this whole Nino situation is all about but on the surface, it looks to be same old, same old.

Unfortunately, I believe it won't change until the team is actually IN Brooklyn.

Visnovsky probably wants to be on a contender considering his age. Nino wants playing time, and probably doesn't care where the team is located as long as he gets it.

I don't think these two situations have anything to do with whether or not we'll be able to get UFAs. I guess we'll find out after the season though.

The Pedro reference holds absolutely no water at all here is why:

Pedro was signed by the Mets in December of 2004 and was on the team through the 2008 season so he played 4 years for them. In those 4 years the biggest names the Mets signed were:

Carlos Beltran - Only singed with the Mets because they offered the most money and he made it publically known he wanted to play for the Yankees
Billy Wagner
Julio Franco - Past his prime
Paul DeLuca - Average catcher at best
Moises Alou - See Julio Franco

Now they had other signings during Pedro’s Met lifetime but names hardly recognizable. So the Pedro theory is wrong.

There is no reason to believe Wang will ever throw money at this team again. Many here think that just because of the move he will suddenly have this cash infusion and decides to pour it back into the team. That too is false. For the revenue streams to be available for the Isles when they move, Wang would have to start building a winner now so they can sell tickets to the new place. This way when they do move they are a playoff caliber team and people will want to come see them. The reality is Wang has made it clear he will continue to spend to the cap floor and when they move they will still be a crappy team playing in a new building. FA's go where there is a chance to win, they don't go because of a building despite what NYI ownership wants you to believe. There are going to be a lot of empty seats in that shiny new building.
