How long until netting is around the rinks in NHL arenas

woman got hit with a puck yesterday, baseball put up netting all around the infield in all MLB parks in the off season, I can see the NHL doing something similar to prevent a possible lawsuit in the future(but they will say for safety reasons) , personally I can't stand looking through a net as I pretty much avoid sitting behind the goals unless I am against the glass and as a baseball fan I always used to splurge and sit behind the dugout but those days are over.

Lightning fan struck by flying hockey puck during playoff game

All depends on the speed of pucks going out. Shots are directed at goalies, so nets cover each 'end'.
Same thing with baseball, hot shot line drives are 'most' dangerous for people around the infield.

If what you're proposing gains momentum, then you should have netting all around the entire baseball field due to chances of getting hit by deep line drives or home runs.

Netting isn't all that big of an inconvenience as an in-arena viewer (depends where you sit), atleast for me. That said, the current netting placement is fine.

At first I was annoyed with this fan hiring an attorney. My rationale was that sitting 5 rows from the ice in a playoff game you should be aware of the possibility a puck may hit you.

Then I saw the shiner on her head...

I would be 100% fine with netting all around the arena I honestly rarely notice netting in all the games i've been too (And I usually sit in seats behind the net as its cheaper).

Much more safe, but could make delay of game calls a little tougher to spot.

The big difference for me is the difference in speed between a ball and a puck in the areas that aren’t covered by the netting. You can rip a line drive into the crowd if you pull/push the ball in baseball, because you’re still trying to hit it hard. In hockey, it’s generally going to be shot much slower because you’re not trying to score. It’s not like Weber and Chara are taking slapshots at the crowd. That’s not to say you can’t get hurt by a puck, but usually it’s because you’re not paying attention to the game

I would probably just ask the team for playoff rickets to the rest of the games, but thats just me lol.

The articles even says it, the team and the building owners are not responsible but you will always have a lawyer hoping for a big payday that will try and sue anyways.

Damn, that's a good shiner!
I remember watching someone get hit this bad at a local Juniour B game years ago, gotta pay attention to the game when play is going on.

I wouldn't think the NHL wants to put netting around the entire rink because of T.V./cameras, otherwise they probably would have years ago as it doesn't really bother you when there.

Netting is so ridiculous. If they want saftey then it's simple: Ban phones. And for more reasons than just saftey.

Concert venues are starting to. Been to a concert lately? Hundreds of people holding their phones above their heads recording and taking pictures the entire time. Not even enjoying the moment, they are just standing like statues with their phones: recording then texting, recording then texting.

And the same thing goes on in sport venues. Phones are out, people are taking selfies, recording... and it's honestly distracting. Especially in the middle of play. And if you're looking at your phone then you aren't paying attention to whatever object that is coming at you.

As a fan going to a game I wouldn't really care if the netting was around the entire rink as it just kinda starts to disappear after a while. Watching a game on TV is another story. I feel like it could make for a very poor experience given where the cameras record the majority of their shots. The netting could be a real obstruction honestly.

On the back of tickets when you buy them they say that the team/ owners aren't responsible for picks fly out and hitting you and even in the saddledome they say it before a game and I think before each period ( I might be wrong about the before each period.)

I'm not a fan of the netting, although I realize we live in a society where it's only a matter of time before this will happen.

The dangerous ones are a hard around the glass to ice the puck that ends up in the seats.
