Impossible to predict without knowing NHL standings and injury statuses. Location sometimes plays a role in player acceptances and I doubt that Denmark is particularly alluring, for typical North Americans anyway. For Canada the 2010 and 2014 tournaments featured terrible rosters, in part due to the Olympics. No NHLers in the Olympics likely means that the Canadian roster will at least be stronger than what was sent in 2010 and 2014.

Copenhagen good city.

I had made the remark that Paris was a draw for North Americans but was quickly refuted by posters saying that Paris was a hole and the security concerns would likely deter players from coming rather than attract them.

Copenhagen ranks amongst the best cities to live and visit in Europe. Actually the Worlds take place at several fairly significant centers of commerce and culture in Europe, including Vienna, Zurich, Stockholm, Prague and Copenhagen. Short of the likes of Paris, London, Milan and Barcelona, three of which the IIHF will never go to, there aren't any huge famous (to those living across the Atlantic) draws that would be particularly more attractive to an average American/Canadian in Europe than these choices.

If there are no NHLers at the Olympics we might see a slightly stronger roster than usual even. No offense meant to Slovakia, but it's 2019 I'm more worried about. Bratislava usually isn't on anyone's top 20 list of European cities to visit.

Better than 2010 and 2014 doesn't mean "dream" roster though. It could just be average.

Hockey Canada agreed with you last year. The thing is, it doesn't matter if Paris is a great city or a trash heap - when it comes to attracting players, all that matters is perception. Paris has a great reputation, or at least it did before the last few years. Copenhagen doesn't strike me as having a big profile among 20-something hockey players, regardless of how nice it may be. Bratislava will have a similar issue, but as you suggest it will likely be worse.

I think a lot will depend on if your team is in Herning or Copenhagen. I saw several players out with their wives/girlfriends sightseeing and shopping. It seems clear they view these tournaments as both fun to play and a nice sightseeing trip with the family. Copenhagen is fine, Herning will not be attractive, even if I think it's a nice town. Bratislava has Vienna 45 minutes away.

Meh, you can't really call it a dream team if a country is missing two or three of their superstars. What will the USA look like if Kane and Matthews go deep in the NHL playoffs? What about Canada with Crosby and McDavid? Sweden with Karlsson and Hedman? I'm going to miss the Olympics.

My opinion Canada and USA bring almost dream team rosters.

Maybe best rosters over many years.
Agree with me?

Too many unknown factors. Unless you know what teams won't make the playoffs and which teams won't release their players again to play in the tourney

Looking at the 2011 roster the Canadian team doesn't seem that terrible to me. Also, as you mentioned Vienna is not so far away.

Also, I would hope that players don't see the WC just as a vacation and that they would consider also the sports side of the game. Atmosphere in Slovakia should be good for example.

The 2011 team was weak, but not like the 2010 and 2014 teams. I highly doubt that they see it as just a vacation, but certainly that is one factor.

It's not just a vacation, they want to play for their countries, but it's a much easier sell to the wives/girlfriends for the older guys. Hey honey want to spend three weeks in Paris? Vienna? Minsk?

I think the Canadian roster will be better. Not sure about USA. Sweden's will be worse.

On paper, the Finnish roster will be much better.

Quite a few players turned down invitations this year because they played in the World Cup back in September. While it is impossible to predict the roster I expect Canada to be better next year.

You are probably right on that one, but we should still get a pretty decent team since Copenhagen is so close and our depth is much better now than it was just a couple of years ago.

95% chance Sweden brings a worse team. Goalie will be worse, defense will be worse. Offense has a slight chance to be better.

When we won gold in 2013, eight players returned for 2014. Six of the returnees were from Europe, the other two were fringe NHLers(Gustafsson and Järnkrok).

Now, even if Grönborg is a terrible coach he will be liked by NHLers so it doesn't have to be a dramatic fall off. Just a very different team.

it makes me sad we might not see nylander on team sweden again in a long while. If Leafs become a powerhouse, say goodbye to him until next worldcup or so.

i think the nhl-hype will die out, nhlers will be happy with this gold and decline for some years now.

and with the olympics in february i think many euro league players will decline to play in world championship, the wc is only like 2 months after olympics, they will be tired.

Not sure how you can tell before the end of the season approaches.

Even if a lot of good Canadian players are available, injuries come into play.

I think Canada will ice a somewhat decent team as always, I also think Sweden will be fairly strong considering its right in their backyard. The American team will be as it always is. No star American players will show up so it will be younger NHL players with a few NCAA guys. Top end American players only care if it's a prestigious thing like the Olympics. For the Worlds, they could care less.
