I think Ovie and Tarasenko would be more than 3rd liners. (Though what a great 3rd line that'd be with Kuznetsov)

Russian offense is always pretty good and it can cause serious troubles to any team. The thing is that the opposition - like Sweden, Canada, or the US - has also either great D or very good two-way forwards - or both - so then it might not look that great on the ice when they play those teams, but the power is there. The D would use a player like Gonchar, someone who can distribute the puck to those high skilled forwards. It isn't bad as it is, but in comparison to other elite countries it's visibly worse.

The Russians have solid team though. The goal will be always to score more goals than the opposite team, which Russia can manage against Sweden and Finland imo, maybe against the US too. I'm not sure if any team in the world can beat Canada at this moment, so that shouldn't be viewed as something horribly bad. Also, things change, and in one tournament, one game, anything can happen when your players play really well.

Lots of firepower up front and I have the forward group among the best. Goaltending is underrated and again might be just behind Canada but that defense is really lacking a top pairing and overall I have them meh at best...

What do you think of all-time team Russia/Soviet?

Krutov - Larionov - Makarov
Mogilny - Fedorov - Bure
Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Kovalchuk
V.Kozlov - Malkin - Kovalev

Fetisov - Kasatonov
Gonchar - Zubov
A.Markov - Konstantinov

Tretiak
Khabibulin

You don't help the cause of evaluating by posting strange rosters.

And russian team A will undergo major changes soon, so you need to tell us what (relevant) team A you mean. By relevant I mean the fact that we will only see it play in 2018 ans 2020 thanks to the disgust the NHL is. And mybe they will try to *** up 2018.

Some thoughts.

If you think Marchenko or Ozhiganov are ahead of Zadorov on this roster you are nuts. And Markov should retire after this season.

You totally right.
But main problem Team Russia lousy coaching

Because of the major differences in the intensity of training regimen that Soviet players endured in comparison to the NHL training routine, and the use of the most advanced scientific and physiological concepts in the training programs, Soviet-era players had a distinct advantage in performance over modern Russian players. Russian players of today have similar talent, but lesser skill and ability to play as a team because of less comprehensive training, conditioning and effective drills. I doubt that many of the players you list would make a national team that included Soviet players.

Certainly Kharlamov and Makarov are the two most talented and productive forwards in Soviet/Russian history. Valeri Vasiliev would match any defenseman in history other than Fetisov. But there are others like the Golikov brothers, Maltsev, Bykov, Khomutov, Kamensky, Svetlov, Drozdetsky, Pervukhin, Bilyaletdinov, and many others who are going to displace guys like Viktor Kozlov, Kovalchuk, Gonchar, Markov, Konstantinov and others, the way I see it.

I don't like Voinov on the Russian roster. Bad karma to include him. Other teams will play extra hard for their wives if he is on the other team. Best to find another defenseman.

Scratch Kozlov, Kovalev, Markov and Khabibullin from that list.

Put Bure and Mogilny in the right positions.

Kovalchuk should be in by a hair at best. And on his off wing he is out.

It is beyond me how you leave Kharlamov annd Bobrov out. Basically the whole Mikhailov - Petrov - Karlamov line as well as Firsov should be on the list.

I would go with

Krutov-Larionov-Makarov
Kharlamov-Petrov-Mikhailov
Bure-Fedorov-Mogilny
Ovechkin-Datsyuk-Firsov

Fetisov-Kasatonov
Vasiliev-Zubov
Markov-Konstantinov
Gonchar-Ragulin

Tretiak
Bobrovsky

Top 3 lines have instant chemistry, fourth line is a checking line. Defense has a nice mix of skill and physicality on every pairing. I didn't include Bobrov because I feel like it was a different era, and he wasn't really tested against top competition.

Its missing Buchnevich who has had a pretty excellent rookie season. And he picked Sorokin over Shestyorkin.

Bear12Good hates the Rangers. :sarcasm:

By the time ovechkin NHL career is over he may be considered a top 3 goal scorer in NHL history and you put him on your checking line. Lol.

Eh... Russia, like the Soviets before, doesn't really do a checking line in the traditional sense.
