How Good are the Carolina Hurricanes?

After not making the playoffs for nearly 10 years, the Canes seem to finally have some positive momentum. Since the turn of the new year, the Canes are 13-4-1, the best record in the NHL. Aho's great play and the addition of Niederreiter has been huge for their goal scoring ability, while both Mrazek and McElhinney have been lights out.

What are your thoughts on the Hurricanes? Could this team potentially make a playoff run?

Well, the team still lacks scoring power and is their center depth is not very good. The system is good and the level of their game has been good for like 3 seasons in a row. Sebastian Aho is a superstar in the making and with just enough support they can make the playoffs this year but I doubt they'll go very far even if that's the case.

The coming seasons, tho... They have good prospects and they've been able to cut good deals with their core pieces. Hope the management does their job and stops trading good players for pucks.

Not sure about making a run. I'd hate to make the playoffs after all these years as the 8 and face TB in the 1st round. Still a big question whether we can even sneak into the playoffs. I think the next two games are very important. 6/6 for first 3 games of this road swing and we end with NJ and Ott. It would feel disappointing to not win out or at worst net 3/4.

We need CBJ, Wash, and Pitt to continue faltering.

The hell? You'd hate to make the playoffs because the likelihood of winning in the first round is low?

I haven't actually seen them play so I might be way off base, but statistically in the last 5 games they've both played I wouldn't describe either Mrazek or McElhinney as lights out.

While not making a statement regarding your comment - just to show how difficult it is making assessments from stat sheets - they've logged 2 shutouts in the past 5 games.

Yeah I find it's slightly easier to do so with goaltenders (if you're passing the eye test but have one game over .900 in the last 5 something weird is probably going on), but still not a good way to judge players. I just read lights out and was expecting something like over .915 over the last 10ish games, and the actual numbers aren't even close. But yes you're right 2 shutouts in the last 5 which is pretty good, and hopefully something they can continue.

I guess lights out was a bit of a stretch, but both have been very solid and it's been a while since goaltending has been a positive in Carolina.

They're 14th in a 31 team league, so I wouldnt say they're "good". Pretty solidly mediocre is more accurate.

Crappy goaltending, crappy forward depth, very good blue line.

Not counting McIlhenney's BUF game (5 GA), saw it on a game broadcast that's he's been the best goalie with 20+ starts since 2017-2018 - he's been solid.

Fair enough, really I think I was just hoping to check their numbers and see them be decently above average. I'd love to see the Canes get some semblance of steady goaltending, fun team to watch.

Pretty good imo. They have definitely impressed me battling back into the playoff discussion
