The NHL has been giving out Free samples to the IOC for years... maybe its time the IOC gave something back to the NHL for taking all the risk.
The NHL has obviously discovered that the IOC does not consider what they provide to be worth very much.
The sad thing is, this isn't the first time Bettman and the owners have been humbled in such a manner; the league consistently demands to be treated and/or compensated on par with the other major sports, but when their wish is granted and real numbers are exchanged, they quickly find themselves wishing they'd left the original arrangement alone:
-It happened with ESPN, forcing the league to wander for ten years in the American TV desert on Versus/NBCSN.
-It happened with the 24/7 series and HBO, leaving them with no other partner but Epix (lol) for their specialty productions.
-Last not least, we have the present debacle- which is doubly as hilarious, as I believe the league looked at the World Cup as its best-on-best replacement- the plan being they'd get to keep to all of the revenue and thus make out like bandits. It turns out people don't like gimmicks, though, and that blew up on them in short order.
Bettman can continue losing all he likes on the national/international stage, and the owners are free to continue supporting his tenure; that doesn't mean they've been successful, though, and it doesn't mean the NHL has been mistreated. They've earned every dollar they've received- and every dollar they haven't.
