number of F's given = 0.

He's fun to watch. You can do that for 82+ games per season every season for the next however many years if you want to get your fill. Don't need to see him beating up on Latvia or wherever.

Pretty sure it wouldnt matter for the NHL as nowadays I think the NHL is the highest paying league ntm its the highest level of hockey and most hockey players dream of playing in the NHL one day. Players are competitive and if they have the opportunity to play at the highest level against the best players they will take that over anything else imo.

Absolutely sickening that the best player of this generation won't get a chance to show his talent on the international stage and represent his country. If the NHL is going to dig their heels in defying fan interest and defying player interest it's time for a new Commissioner. He doesn't have the best interests of the League in mind and therefore should be replaced.

IMPEACH BETTMAN.

And outside Canada, and some minor parts of the US, nobody cares about the plastic NHL. Teams made up of mercenaries without any connection to the cities/areas fighting for a trophy that nobody cares about except themselves.

Olympics >>>> NHL AINEC tbh. Stanley Cup means nothing, it's just a bunch of random players without pride playing for plastic teams.
Representing your country is an honor, playing for some random cooperation who drafted you or paid big bucks is nothing more than a job.

I think there are arguments to both sides.

Why do businesses often give out free samples of a new item?

Because they believe the product is good and once people try it, they'll like it and give them repeat business. The Olympics provide a sample of the NHL's product on the biggest stage in the world for two weeks, and then the NHL benefits from that exposure for 4 years.

At least that's the thought.

When companies give out free samples they usually get to market their company while doing so.

Providing exposure to hockey isn't the same thing as providing exposure to the NHL. The latter is what the owners care about and without throwing them a bone in some form what incentive do they have to shutter their business in mid-season?

The IOC wants them there, the players want to go, but neither want it enough to provide anything to the one side that doesn't want to go.

This whole ordeal is a travesty.

The NHL should be ashamed of themselves.

you guys just don't want that niggling little asterisk by his name when it's time to assemble the yearly list of Greatest Hockey Players ever and compare their merits...

No one is going to think he's not as good as this or that guy because they have olympic gold and he doesn't.

absolutely sickening? really? yeah i guess just a touch below dead syrian children, the plight of immigrants in the US, mutilated puppies...McDavid missing the Olympics.
Crime against humanity right there.

:shakehead

Are you aware that Bettman isn't the one making this decision? You could replace him with anyone on the planet and the decision would still be the same. The Owners want something in return for letting their players go to the Olympics.

Whether that's an extension of the current CBA to prevent a lockout for a couple of years, or the ability to market the NHL based on the success of their players during the Olympics, they want something in return for gambling on the health of their players and condensing their schedules.

I don't think either request is unreasonable.

NHL board of governors owns Bettman, people. lets remember that. i mean he could be a complete crap weasel too for all i know but he's the mouthpiece for the brain.

When he signed his current deal NHL players could still go. Hard to blame him when the rules got changed on him.

Going to the 2006 and 2010 Olympics was explicitly stated in the 2005 CBA. No statement about the Olympics was included at all in the 2013 CBA.

So, when Ovie signed his 13 year deal to start with the 2008-09 season, all he knew was that there was a guarantee of the 2010 Olympics. He may have assumed the NHL would continue going but there was no guarantee of it. Things often change because of CBA negotiations and it's always a gamble when you sign a contract that is going to span CBAs.

It's 100% about having the balls to put your country before Bettman.

Standing up for what you believe in is smart, only suck ups ashamed that Canadian stars don't have the balls to do it would believe otherwise.

Before Bettman?

The fact that some of you don't even bother to learn anything about the Commissioner and his role, and then try and school people on being anti-IOC is pure ignorance.

I couldn't care LESS about McDavid ever playing in the Olympics. I despise the Olympic games. Each games costs many billions of dollars, all for a few stupid medals and some chest thumping. Then the facilities get abandoned and fall into disrepair. We need to stop having Olympic games altogether, and spend that money on people/things that need it.

Totally fine with it. Olympics is not the place for millionaire professional athletes. NHL should focus on the World Cup of Hockey. Now if I could only get all the other sports to kick the professionals out and have a true amateur world sporting event

More mad about Matthews, Eichel, Jones, Werenski, etc. USA finally has a squad (IF picked correctly) to help Kane, JVR and others compete against the Canadas, Swedens, Russias of the world all either young or still in their prime, and they can't do it.

The NHL has been giving out Free samples to the IOC for years... maybe its time the IOC gave something back to the NHL for taking all the risk.

The NHL has obviously discovered that the IOC does not consider what they provide to be worth very much.

The sad thing is, this isn't the first time Bettman and the owners have been humbled in such a manner; the league consistently demands to be treated and/or compensated on par with the other major sports, but when their wish is granted and real numbers are exchanged, they quickly find themselves wishing they'd left the original arrangement alone:

-It happened with ESPN, forcing the league to wander for ten years in the American TV desert on Versus/NBCSN.

-It happened with the 24/7 series and HBO, leaving them with no other partner but Epix (lol) for their specialty productions.

-Last not least, we have the present debacle- which is doubly as hilarious, as I believe the league looked at the World Cup as its best-on-best replacement- the plan being they'd get to keep to all of the revenue and thus make out like bandits. It turns out people don't like gimmicks, though, and that blew up on them in short order.

Bettman can continue losing all he likes on the national/international stage, and the owners are free to continue supporting his tenure; that doesn't mean they've been successful, though, and it doesn't mean the NHL has been mistreated. They've earned every dollar they've received- and every dollar they haven't.

don't care. if the world cup keeps continuing it'll be the new Olympics in the end.

This is incredibly Russophobic. Ovechkin is actually an extremely smart guy. He just earned a PhD. Crosby has never even been to college.

Hockey IQ and real life IQ are two different things, at the same time though there's not a chance Ovechkin is a dumb hockey player.

NHL is a business. Hockey players are athletes. Depending on there contracts, player can decide for themselves. Will the Oilers suspend MacDavid if he decides to go?

I agree with Oveckin saying he will go no matter what. As an athlete, the best wants the best competition.
