Ill be okay with world cup of hockey if instead of having a u-23 Na/europe teams they have normal countries and a team NA/Europe consisting of talents that did not get picked for their countries. Preferrably all rookies with some complimentary pieces from other leagues.

Could be good

NHL may still go to the Olympics, if not S. Korea, it will be in China, in like 6 yrs.

Why would IOC allow them to participate then tho?

If Olympics with no NHL players prove to do better they wont need NHL.

I can see them allowing nhl if ratings take a massive hit tho

Could lead to interesting clauses in future contracts? Does a player have the right to have a clause that they get the choice to play? Does that violate cba rules? Interesting thought...

No, all contracts are negotiated in the framework of the CBA. You can't contract around them.

Really sucks. We need some kind of best on best but it sucks because nothing will as intense as competing for Olympic gold from the players perspective.

Same for the other young guys like Eichel, Ekblad, Matthews, Lainie, etc. etc.

Sad, angry, indifferent, relieved?
I grew up with NHLers not being in the Olympics...never cared, never bothered me, never even thought about it

It's ********. Crosby's best moment of his entire career is at the Olympics.

NHL will play in China.

South Korea is just too unappealing of a market to make up for the huge time difference too.

If the Winter Games were in Canada or USA next year, no question the NHL would go. It's a bummer South Korea got them.

If anything it kinda sucks more for guys like Crosby, because by the time China rolls around they'll be out of their prime.

Then he should sign a contract which expires the year before the Olympics, so he can sign a 1 year contract in another professional league and compete for his country if that is what he wants.
When he signed his current deal NHL players could still go. Hard to blame him when the rules got changed on him.

**** the NHL seriously. Every single NHL fan wants to see Crosby + McDavid in their prime on the same team.

I dont think they care about china...if they did they would go to korea as the tv times are good for china aswell...meaning alot of chinese get to see it before it comes to china..

Greatest honor of sports is to win Stanley Cup, or Hart Trophy for individuals, not participation in some Mickey Mouse Exho, when stacked Canadian feasts on some semi-amateours...

Don't care for Olympics. NHL>>> So called "internationnal hockey"...

And outside Canada, and some minor parts of the US, nobody cares about the plastic NHL. Teams made up of mercenaries without any connection to the cities/areas fighting for a trophy that nobody cares about except themselves.

Olympics >>>> NHL AINEC tbh. Stanley Cup means nothing, it's just a bunch of random players without pride playing for plastic teams.
Representing your country is an honor, playing for some random cooperation who drafted you or paid big bucks is nothing more than a job.

China is a big deal, much bigger than South Korea. The NHL is already planning to have exhibition NHL games in China. South Korea .... not so much.

If the NHL could gain even a little foothold in China it could translate to some nice revenue money later on, the NBA cashes in significantly from the Chinese market.

Unfortunate for the young players, and unfortunate that the league failed to see the huge marketing opportunity that could have been Crosby and McDavid vs. Eichel and Matthews on the world's biggest stage.

Marketing opportunity? Why would NHL market an event where they don't get anything? They can't show any clips or utilize the olympics due the olympic committee. It's bad business.

The World Cup of Hockey has as much gravitas as the all star game for me.

I already forgot all about it. Probably because of the exhibition final. Can never ever reach Olympic levels of prestige and excludes some damn good hockey nations like Switzerland.

This. If the NHL can capture the interest of even a 1/4 of a percent of China's population that's almost 350 million new fans.

I don't care about this at all. I care about the Stanley Cup and amateur sports not the murky world of the IOC with the bribery, kick-backs, and shady profiteering that has been the norm there for too long.

They are never going to play in the 2018 Olympics (probably) but otherwise never is a long time.

If it turns out to be never its no big deal.

Who cares cant do much about it. Its not like McDavid's the only one missing out from the Olympics. There's a long list of young players that dont get to go to the Olympics which is unlucky but whatever. Sure its disappointing but in the grand scheme of things this is a non factor.

Why do businesses often give out free samples of a new item?

Because they believe the product is good and once people try it, they'll like it and give them repeat business. The Olympics provide a sample of the NHL's product on the biggest stage in the world for two weeks, and then the NHL benefits from that exposure for 4 years.

At least that's the thought.

The NHL has been giving out Free samples to the IOC for years... maybe its time the IOC gave something back to the NHL for taking all the risk.

I feel it's a good look for a league that hasn't had much interest in marketing him league-wide. They don't deserve to benefit from what his appearance in an Olympics would bring. Frankly, I hope the NHL never returns to sport's biggest global stage, and subsequently remains an after-thought outside of North America.
