How do NHL teams have the jerseys with the prospect's name ready at the draft?

What if a team makes a surprise pick and it's right on the spot. How do they get the jersey for the player so quickly? Something I thought about.

Here are some pics from when I attended the 2010 Draft:

Pair of Chicago 2nd rounders. They had a nameplate ready for Stephen Johns, but not one for Kent Simpson. You can see the velcro straps where the nameplate would have gone on Simpson's jersey. Obviously Johns' one didn't look particularly great.

This was as the Devils selected Scott Wedgewood. The staffer almost peeled off and applied the nameplate like a piece of tape. For the higher first rounders, it's likely that the team would have prepared an actual stitched on jersey since there are a finite amount of guys that they'd take. Perhaps in a box at the table, the team has a few stitched on jerseys, blank jerseys, and a pile of potential nameplates for later picks.

As others mentioned, occasionally a team will be caught off guard by somebody dropping into their laps. The Devils didn't have a nameplate ready for Zach Parise in 2003. If I recall correctly, Washington didn't have one for Filip Forsberg in 2012.

Heck, I brought a Nolan Patrick nameplate just in case when I attended the 2017 Draft.

It is interesting after reading/listening to some interviews. Sometimes a team will have a pretty good idea who they'll be targeting even in the later rounds. After sitting through four drafts, it's not too unusual to see a few late round guys get jerseys with nameplates.

I have read in the past that teams go into the draft with a list of 70, maybe 80 names, if that. They all have a rough idea of who they will select, and which prospect will go where, even in the later rounds. If we're speaking of first round picks, teams will prepare a couple of stitched nameplates depending on what pick they have. For the rest, they have their ''favourites'' and simply stick the nameplate (velcro) on the jersey (as seen in the Devils pictures above)

If they have a good idea who will be available they will have a few nameplates ready. Notable exceptions are guys who fall to teams who had no idea they would pick him. Fowler for example didnt have a nameplate at all when the Ducks drafted him since pretty much everyone thought he would be gone in the top 5.

Velcro nameplates would be my guess. I've always been amazed by how quick they have team hats and shirts ready when a team wins the Cup.
