Don't care, personally. They were born and raised in the US, so by all rights, they're American.

Meh.

Our Olympic teams benefit from immigrants playing non-traditional sports so it's only fair that our hockey prowess is spread around.

I want to see the best players play - no matter where they're from, or where their fathers are from.

As a matter of fact, I like seeing kids with Canadian fathers represent the US. It means the game is growing in America. Having the fathers stay in America and build strong development programs (the one in St Louis is starting to produce some kids, along with a nice flow of prospects from Cali) is great for the game.

Canada planted the seed, now we get to watch it grow.

They're American kids. No problem with it.

I think of it this way... I consider myself 100% Canadian. My background beyond my grandparents is heavily Nordic and British. I don't think they're losing any sleep over me identifying as Canadian.

People should play for whatever country they identify themselves with. :dunno:

Hockey is a pretty hard sport to break into. It's expensive and relatively exclusive. So it's no surprise that a good number of young players had parents who are coaches or former players.

Why would it be a problem if the kid is American? Canada doesn't have claims on DNA. I much prefer when this situation happens to when American kids who have Canadian fathers play for Canada.

When they are born in Canada, like Brett Hull or Bryan Trottier, it's kind of weird. But if they were raised and trained in the States, than that's where they should play. That's their country.

A related occurrence is when kids of Canadian NHLers born in the US, and grow up in the US their whole lives then choose to play for Canada. That one bugs me a bit. It happens both ways, but more towards Canada usually. Like Chychrun, and the Footes. Kind of an annoyance to me.

Probably pressure / environmental from home. If you're Dad tells you as a kid "You're Canadian" ... :dunno:

How many of them are big stars though? Keiffer Bellows for now is the closest. How many examples are there right now?

Cal Foote, Jakob Chychrun both picked Canada, not a big deal imo

Canada, or USA, can benefit from European NHLers too. Danil Antropov will likely end up with Canada in a couple years.

None of them are good enough for Canada's top team imo. If they are, they'd probably pick Canada.

Must be hard to have Canadian players living and staying in the US post-career and have their kids develop into stars for the USA...

you do realize that we have former yanks in Canada raising the kids as Canadians? Right?

Take a look a former Blue jays show remained in Canada after the career ended

I'm a little more bothered that Canadian players prefer to stay in the US and not returning to Canada after they retire. Compare to Europeans who the majority would rather return to their country. The kids I can get it since they grew up in the US so I can understand their lack of attachment to Canada. Beside, so far, not many kids of Canadian players suiting up for the US are that good that I'd wish they'd play for Canada. I didn't even care when Hull played for the US and he was born in Canada.

This happens constantly in soccer and it's really not a big deal.

I could count the blood-French players in France's starting 11 on one hand.

Not really a big deal. Never even thought about it before tbh until this thread, they are by all means American and should represent the USA if they want too

It's all a big yawn. Who cares? American-born players play for the US. Big deal.

I feel a little sense of pride if anything. Hockey runs strong in our blood, which this is strong evidence of. And their helping to grow the game down south, which is a good thing.

Wherever you grew up playing hockey should be the country that you represent imo. No hard feelings on ourl side for the most part.

So many players should be Swiss in reality

Most of the Weber (Shea ?), Schneider (Cory), Fischer, Muller ... (or Germans)

Ben Rotlisberger (NFL)

... and by the way, this brings a reflection on a consideration i had.
i thought we were a country of immigration.
(not emmigration !!)
