How can I watch/listen to NHL games without booth commentary?

I want to watch and listen to the game like I am there in the crowd. I don't need two voices incessantly telling me what the score is or how much time is left on a power-play I already know what's going on. They could just be silent and I would have a better viewing experience as a fan of the sport.

Any streams available? Paid or free?

Thanks, guys.

After watching one Bruins game with ESPN recently I would like that option.

If I remember correctly, didn't there used to be some kind of ice-level camera/audio option on the old Gamecenter Live service? Did they carry this over to NHL TV? Could be an option if it still exists, audio on one device, with the game muted on your TV. Unfortunately I'm no longer a subscriber to check or myself.

Or my memory may just be plain off.

1.Make a lot of money.
2.Buy NHL broadcast rights.
3.Make your demand.
4 ???
5.Games with no commentary.

He wants the crowd and player noise, but not the commentary- it’s not unreasonable imo, but I don’t know if that option exists. Might be a cool feature tbh.
They'd just need to have two audio streams as the standard, then you select at home whay you're getting.

With all the advances in digital broadcasting it's frankly a bit surprising this hasn't been done already. You get all kinds of Dolby multi-channel streams for positional audio but it's always just that one stream (or crickets as the alternative).

This would be very useful for many other things beside sports too.

It's indeed a reasonable ask. Unlikely to happen for all the cross-industry standardizing hassle it would involve, unless the demand gets up.

Turn down the volume

I thought it was obvious, but there are a lot of noises in the arena. You should go watch a game some time, it's really a different experience.

i have
Maybe you should lighten up on the rhetoric; you might get a different response

MLB.TV has this option. It's how that YouTuber Jomboy got famous, by turning off the commentary and maxxing out the onfield volume, he picked up all kinds of funny and crazy shit like Yankees Manager's 'Savages' rant.

I think your only hope might be if you have a Surround Sound or other sound system and you try muting certain channels/speakers and see if that works, but most games are still broadcast in stereo I believe.

Other than that, you'd have to play around with a Volume/Audio mixing software to mute the commentators voices which would of course be next ot impossible to do with a live game.

The NFL tried an "announcerless" broadcast for a meaningless regular-season game in 1980, after promoting the hell out of it. All the sounds of a real game in your living room!

Early on, it became apparent that the language on the field was R-rated. As a result, they muted it so much that you might as well have had the volume turned all the way down. I don't think they ever did that again.

Announcerless game - Wikipedia.

I too have always wanted the option of watching a game like to this. For me personally its less about that sensation about being in the arena, and more about watching the game by itself without any commentary. Which is kind of the same thing i suppose hah. I just occasionally want to hear that crack of a onetimer, or crash into the boards by istelf.

This reply below is probably the best DIY option.

I understand what you want & completely agree that it would be a cool option to have for viewing ... unfortunately ... it's probably not going to happen (except perhaps the occasional one off promo type of thing). There's just too much money/branding/tradition with the announcers. If you give viewers the option to not listen to them, a frightening (to the money people) number of people will probably choose that option. If say 60% of the viewers don't want to listen to the announcers mention that "This faceoff is brought to you by 'x'..." or "The final minute of the period is brought to you by 'y'...", then both 'x' & 'y' companies are justifiably going to ask why they're paying as much as they are for the privilege of sponsoring a faceoff/final minute/etc.

As with way too many things these days, the answer to your question tends to be 'follow the money'

(maybe an optional audio feed on a big Center Ice type of package where the league/owners know that they've already gotten a big chunk of change from you up front)

I swear you used to be able to get bird's eye and goalie cams with no commentary. A poor substitute for the regular feed sans talking. Though sometimes they'd not cut out the audio during intermission and you could hear the booth being candid. That was fun.

Anyway, having an option to cut out the booth audio channel would be nice sometimes. I don't get why there's some snark directed at OP. It's a fair ask.
