Just looking at the stats and I was kinda shocked by this...so Nylander has been on the ice for 14 more goals against than the Leafs have scored 5v5, right? And 9 for our Captain? That seems like 18m not well-spent...

A good article that deals with this. Goaltending seems to be the main problem.

That article should've compared other lines.

88 and 91 will appear to play better defensively if the goalies cover up for them and be more exposed if they don't? Who knew?

Willy floats plain and simple. Yes I have seen him play a solid, aggressive physical high energy game for 60 minutes more than once. When he does he is a dominant player. Problem is he puts 3 of those together, than 5 so so efforts, then 5 to 10 "I am exhausted and sore so I am going to float" efforts, gets in shit 3 good ones and the cycle repeats it's self. It is astounding to me that about 50% of the people on this site see the speed, the hands and are totally enamored and convinced that he is a world class untouchable. There is so much more to hockey particularly in the NHL. Willy is more skilled than say a Ryan O'Reilly but who is the better hockey player (age difference aside)?? You don't WIN with flashy fly by guys you win with players who get involved in all aspects of the game. I move Willy in a heart beat for a very solid youngish defenseman who plays with an edge and can move (and lower contract).

People forget J.T is coming back from a horrific injury this season, and he's still almost at PPG. Nylander floats a lot which makes things more difficult for a center, but Tavares always competes his foot speed is a little troubling though, there's still gas in the tank for J.T so don't worry yet, he would play much better if he had Marner on his wing full time.

Certainly there play warrants some criticism but luck is playing a role.

Tavares/Nylander on ice SH% - 8.91/7.94
Tavares/Nylander on ice SV% - 89.72/89.18

Hey thanks for those replies...explains some of it...

JT plays down low below the puck and isn't quick enough to get back when the puck goes the other way , Willie isn't good enough to cover for a mediocre defensive C

Fact 1: the goaltending is good when neither is on the ice.
Fact 2: the goaltending is good when only one is on the ice.
Fact 3: the goaltending is bad when both are on the ice.
Conclusion: what has changed in those three situations is the goalie.

I'm sorry, but that is not the logical conclusion.

For whatever reason, those two players don't work well together. To my eye, Nylander gets frustrated with Tavares' lack of speed and frequent bad passes.

Coincidentally or not, Tavares doesn't seem to mesh with the other speedster on the team, Mikheyev.

I think the solution is to give Tavares two wingers who are more his speed/style (without touching the top line), and put one or both of Nylander and Mikheyev with Kerfoot.

They have no chemistry at all, and somehow despite that their point totals are actually pretty impressive. Also some really bad goaltending, but not enough to excuse how bad they've been. Nylander was playing like Matthews in the first month of the season, I'm not sure what happened. Even Tavares was absolutely godly early on, not sure what happened or when it happened but they haven't clicked at all. But when JT is paired with Marner, they're unstoppable.

One is slow and the other is lazy. JT's poor play without the puck was a thing going back to his Islanders days.

Is it possible JT is also frustrated with 88s lack of compete?? If there is any friction, pretty dumb for Leafs to allow this to go on for this long if flipping 16 and 88 is the solution IMO. Or are we missing something?

Mentioned that over a month a go and the FANBOYS were insisting +/- is an overrated stat lol

It's a good directional stat but not one I'd use if I was a GM looking to make a trade. People who dismiss +/- without looking at context are just lazy fans.
