Florida will be in a cap bind next season. As of now, we have 9 forwards, 5D, and 2 goalies signed with 4.566M in projected cap space. Fortunately, the team's core+main depth is signed.

One way to fix this could be an Orpik style trade+buyout for Hornqvist, a leader who isn't worth his contract. To remind everyone, in 2018, the Capitals traded Brooks Orpik+Grubauer to Colorado for a second round pick. Orpik was then bought out and re-signed by Colorado.

Now, Hornqvist's salary is about the same so the buyout would be $1,766,667 for the next two-seasons for the acquiring team. Florida could then re-sign him to a reasonable 2M dollar contract to make him whole.

How expensive would this be for Florida? Would Owen Tippett+Hornqvist for a draft pick work for some team?

Guy showed last night exactly why he’s so valuable and does so regularly. Imo he’s worth every penny, plus he was Zito’s first trade which moved out someone who wasn’t close to being worth his contract. Horny was brought in and did a great job helping to completely the change the team around. And continues to.

No idea what Zito does, and I don’t get why a few Panther fans are so obsessed with the off-season and moving Hornqvist, but imo he’s not going anywhere. He has a modified NTC to boot.
Just enjoy this season and trust the GM.

The league looked very closely at the Orpik deal and almost brought the hammer down on the two teams. You could easily get penalized for trying it.

If the Oilers were to trade Draisaitl, something like Hornqvist, Weegar, Knight, Lundell doesn't seem too awful for either side.

violaswallet, see the post above, imo it won’t happen. And Orpik had years of playing with Washington before they brought him back. I don’t think Hornqvist would be ok with this.

The league frowns on these deals with him being acquired and bought out, thrn he goes back to original team to sign.

iirc opril had a lower last year salary so the buy out was lower in cash.

Yeah, I don’t think the OP realizes this plan involves having Horny lie to the NHL when they investigate the trade. I doubt his agent would go along with this either.

The Orpik deal made everyone squirrelly because people thought the Caps actually did what the OP is proposing to do: get another team to buy out a player so they can sign him for a lower salary.

Washington “got away with it” because they (most likely) did simply trade Orpik to dump his salary and then signed him later, without any pre-planning it, because he was still available in late July and cheap. (It was a 37 year old Brooks Orpik.) They were investigated by the NHL and cleared.

The trade at the 2018 draft was Orpik/Grubauer for a 2nd. He was bought out by Colorado on June 24th, 2018. Orpik got a one year/1m deal, with 35+ bonuses, from the Caps on July 24th, 2018.

Thanks for the fact check; I didn't realize it wasn't allowed!
