Hockey glove palm wear

My hockey gloves wear out pretty quickly on my top hand palm. I've never played hockey in a club so I have not gotten any coaching, but I play every day at my local outdoor rink.

My biggest concern is that the way that I hold the stick makes the gloves wear out faster. I'm bad at explaining stuff so I'll let a couple pictures do it for me.

Here's my old bauer glove. The very end of the stick usually is where the hole in the glove is.

Like I said, I'm not sure if the way I hold my stick is "correct". This is how I have always done it and it feels more comfortable. Photo on top is how I hold my stick, bottom one is how I think most people do it.

Does anyone else hold their stick like I do? Should I try to change it? Any tips for glove durability increase? I've read about tacki-mac grips but they're not available in Finland. I might try to glue or stitch an extra patch of leather(or some other material) to my new gloves before they wear out.

I just bought a new pair of Warrior DT2's and I love them. After 2 weeks of use there's already a good amount of wear in that same spot.

This thread can also be used to discuss hockey glove palm wear in general

I'm in the same exact boat as you.
As a result I also use a very narrow knob to fit in my palm. I noticed some players, such as Lidstrom, use a rather wide knob so I can only assume they hold the stick different than we do.

How about a thinner knob made of electrical tape, and your regular tape or grip tape for the rest of the handle?

Town NHL hates !
Same problem here. I really enjoy my current gloves, but I'm currently onto 2nd change of right-hand palm while the left one is still the original.

I used to use white tape, then cover it with a thin layer of clear tape. It takes some getting used to because its slippery, but eventually I got used to it. My gloves lasted a lot longer.

For some reason I stopped doing that, and I don't know why :)

You can get those holes repaired at some places, or sew some leather in there if you're in a Home Ec mood.

I'm definitely trying the electric tape tomorrow. Only going to put one strip on the top just to cover the sharp edges of the shaft. Like in that picture in OP.
Probably should order the tacki mac somewhere it seems great

The way you hold your stick is fine. I've had the same issue for as long as I've played hockey, and have switched to smaller and small knobs over time as a result. I don't play quite as much as I used to, but it alleviated the problem somewhat.

I have this problem way worse in sledgehockey, constantly sliding right up and down the stick blade right along the tape/

I actually found a tacki-mac at my local sport shop! It's the basic wrapped texture with medium knob. I cut the knob off and folded a bit of the grip in the shaft to make the edges clean. There's a plastic plug to keep it in there. I love it, takes less effort to get a quick shot off with the extra grip. It's a bit thicker than I like but I'll get used to it.

Here's how it looks:

Yeah that's what turns me off about tacki-mac grips, the thickness. There's certain sticks I won't even use since the shaft feels too thick for my liking.

You're holding your stick correctly, and most people get holes in their gloves there. You can get gloves repalmed, if you have a nice enough pair to make it worth the money (usually about $60, IIRC).

The tacki-mac or electrical tape ideas will slow the process, but to me they make things feel funny. Your call on whether you like it our not, but they may be worth a shot.

I like TM grips a lot, but their knobs are either about 5/8" wide or gigantic with the big butt model. I e-mailed them once about getting a pro stock one and they were almost willing to sell me some, but then they said I should just get a retail one instead, so I gave up.

Seriously, almost everyone I know just uses regular 1" tape wrapped around the top of the stick. If they made one like that, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Anyways, I hold my stick like you do, with my pinky/ring finger on the knob (can't recall exactly). I have little holes in the palm in the same spot.

There's a product called "Palm Saver" that might be a good preventative measure. I am going to try picking up some moleskin to see if that would be a cheap fix.
