any helpful hints or tips you may know of or have used in a hockey fight?

just wondering, I've heard so many over the years i wanna know which ones are most commonly told

Stay in tight and close till you get his helmet off, tie up his punching hand and try to keep your head ducked and between his arm and arm that your tying him up with, be patient with your punches don't throw like a mad man (unless your getting pummled, in which case you should either try to throw him to the ice or get down yourself) throwing like a mad man will leave you exposed and you can bet you'll get one right in the mush, be patient and throw bombs when theres a good opportunity while throwing in jabs to keep him honest

Its awesome for me, because I'm equally as strong with both hands, so I can hold their strong (usually right arm) with my left, and just punch away with my right. Stay in close to them, and depending on how the fight's going, if its going to be a fists of fury fight then put your head down (protecting your face) and swing away. I often tug with my left hand, to try and throw him off-balance some more as well.

Throw elbows, not fists.

Don't try to hit them in the face, aim for an area behind their face.

I am guessing that you have done this a couple of times. Great info

First piece of advice is to know if your opponent is a righty or lefty. Get this wrong and you're done before you start. If he's a righty, try and grab his right shoulder (preferably his shoulder pad at the collar) with your left hand so he has to throw over your arm and you'll take away his power. Try and jerk him off balance and let your own rights go. If you're a lefty and you don't think the other guy knows it let him tie you up first because he will probably tie up your right arm and then you can throw lefts at will.
This is only to be used if talking it out first doesn't work however.

It is all about the tie-up. If you get a good grip of his right and get him tied up he will be so worried about freeing himself up that he may forget about throwing lefts. if so then you got him at his will and feel free to swing away. Dont forget when he puts his head down to lean back and throw some uppercuts.

Hmm.... I have some advice for you...

When I fight I make sure to grab the other persons sleeves before anything. If you are able to control their hands you are in control of the fight.

"Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?"

Yeah you want to grab their jersey at around the shoulder thing so your arm is kind of tieing off his arm, but you're still free enough too give him good jabs in the face, then when he gets a litte off-balance just sock him with your free arm.

Do the Rob Ray and the Murray Baron!

cut the collar and then sew it back up, breaks when the other guy pulls on the jersey and wouldn't get a good hold..

and then push your helmet up and over your eyes and just hammer away

First thing.. figure out what way the guy shoots, and go tie up his top arm... that's generally going to be his dominant arm, and therefor the one that you do NOT want to get touched with under any circumstance.

I'm 6'4", so my fighting style is pretty different from most guys, but I'll generally take my left arm (assuming the other guy is a righty as well), and get it under and over his left arm. Hard to describe, but I'll basically leverage his arm with my left arm, making sure it's completely tied up and my left hand is around his face.

At this point you need to go for his chin strap, if you can manage to rip it off, you've got him.. once again, because of my height and long arms I'll usually use my left arm to rip at the chin strap.. if it pops off, rip the helmet off from the back.

Now hold him at a range, keep your feet moving (so you have some balance.. worst thing you can do is stand completely still), and feed him that left hand with a few short jabs, and just wait for your opening..

And then nail him with the right :)

I am dissapointed that the majority of the comments that are made are based more of speculation rather than actual experience. Comments like tie up the other guys arm is so obvious your basic radio color guy could spit out. I do like the deeper comments like helmet removal and chin strap release, but.....

My preferred method is to "hook" my left pinkie finger in the loop of the chin strap and grap the jersey. By hooking your finger in the loop you control your victims head, with some slight down and outward pressure you expose the all valurable chin. It will only take a couple solid hits to fold your opponent up like a soft shelled taco. If you are getting your butt kicked take it to the ice quickly an obivious choice.

Something I do (in the rare occassion I actually do fight) is to both pull and jab with the hand clenching the jersey. This usually throws the guy a little off balance especially if you keep mixing it up between trying to pull him off balance and the occassional jab. Of course I'm still trying to toss as many rights as possible during this process
