Not sure if there has been a thread on this, but I am looking to buy some new skates so wanted some opinions from you guys. I've been using I guess 5-6 year old RBK skates. They no longer make this brand. Any of you guys want to share your opinions on the skates you wear (fit, durability, value, etc)? What stores in the NYC/Westchester area have the best skate selection and prices?

I used rbks for years and years. Switched the to the jetspeeds...absolutely love these skates.

does the angle of the boot (heel to toes) effect forward and back skating?
Not for me. I just like the fact that I have almost no negative space in the boot. It's an issue I had with the Reebok's so I had to pump em up to fill in the gaps.

Really all you can do is try on every pair of skates at the shop and see what you feels the best to your feet. My local shop can actually 3d scan your foot and tell you what's the right skate for you....I'm sure the places near you can do the same?

I have the VH skates (now True Hockey). Full custom. Totally worth it for me. I had major surgery on my ankle and my skates never fit right after that, no such issue with the True skates.

Yeah a bunch of guys on my team have the VH. 1k for a pair of skates is nuts lol

Ha. Spending over $10k a season on hockey tickets is nuts... $1k for a pair of skates (actually $940) is just a little irresponsible!

Do the guys on your team love the VH skates too?

how is the pricing/selection for skates at pure hockey/westside skate/anywhere else in the city?

Most shops will match online prices so I would look around find good prices. Try on the skates and tell them the best price and if they match it, you will buy it from them. 90% of they would rather make the sale.

As far as VH skates are concerned, you are buying a soup to nuts custom skate. I think the added expense is more than worth it. They 3d map your foot and take in account the contours, bumps, bunions, pressure points etc. It's well worth close to $1000 bucks. I haven't bought them but I am thinking about eventually buying a pair.

I'd say it's well worth it if you've got the money and are a high level player or a player with weird shaped feet. For the rest of us a high end 500 dollar pair of skates work just as well.

Honestly, I buy my skates on clearance at HM. They had top of the line models ($900) skates for 300-400 sometimes less. You can't beat that. VH skates seem to last a hell of a long time. The guys that are using them for a year or more, they still look brand new. My 1000 top of the lines skates were beat up 6 months after getting them. I had to buy all kinds of cushions to protect against lace bite and such.....lol

Also, this is something I know not many people have. You should look into power foot performance inserts if you do not have custom skates. They are one of the single best pieces of hockey equipment I have used. I have no stake in the company, it's just a product that works fantastic and makes your skate way more comfortable. You can get them off of amazon.

They eliminate the negative space in the front of your skate. They're awesome, I have told a bunch of people about it and every single one that uses it, loves it.

Yeah it can have an impact. But that should be very low on the totem pole when buying a skate. Pitch can be achieved in many ways, not just by the boot itself. You can always add heel lift like SpeedPlate or SuperFeet or add it through blade profiling.

I know a lot of people enjoyed Grafs and their steeper pitch. Easton Mako's are similar in that regard.

Things like Fit, feel/comfort, stiffness are higher priorities.
