Brutal. Burnt a top goalie pick

I did the same. No idea what these top country's fascination with worse goalies is, but here we are.

Blomqvist has a GAA under 1 and a ridiculous save percentage in the Liiga this year. It's only 8 games, but still. Merilainen was awful in the OHL until the last week of November/first week of December and is still pretty iffy. Jatkola is no name filler, and even then I find it hard to believe they couldn't find at least a dozen other guys who could make the team over him.

Cossa was legitimately a 1st round caliber goalie. Nothing against Garand, because he could legitimately be a starter in another year, but Cossa is better. Brochu should have been nothing more than filler.

That's the thing drafting so early in advance of the tournament starting with not much idea of lines or even starting goalies.

If you draft 1-2 nights before the start, Garand could possibly go #1 overall with the info that he's starting game 1.

Yep, but to be fair it took approximately 10 days to do the draft. It's unfortunately not Yahoo so it's not like I can put a 1 minute timer on everyone's clocks.

I don't mind the unknown aspect. Makes it challenging, and lines always change in this tournament anyways.

The only thing I would change is the goalies. I feel like drafting goalies is mostly just drafting for team, and there are only 5 good teams most of the time. The odd time you might get lucky and have a coach decide to play an inferior goalie, or the goalie craps the bed and they need to go to their second option, but that is fairly rare. The rest of the time, you are mostly just picking the team that wins it all or may get a few shutouts.

I always thought it would have been more interesting to have a 5 forwards/3 defensemen (or 7/3 if you wanted to keep it at 10 players) and then had goalies as a wildcard. You can bet on a good goalie since they can pick up big points, but you are not forced to draft some random backup or a crappy starter just to meet the requirement if you don't get one of the good guys. It makes drafting a goalie more of a strategy than just scrambling to take a goalie before all of the good ones are gone.

Food for thought for next year, and it makes it a little bit different than all of the other pools that I have seen out there.

Or you can have the starter for whoever finishes 3rd in the USA/SWE/RUS group. Their backup gets the "easy game" in probably Switzerland and then they lose to Canada or Finland in the QF and they only get 2 points from 1 win against Slovakia. That's likely going to happen to someone, too much risk for me in the first 12 picks.

Or you can pick a starter who's the 3rd stringer, or you can pick the guy who gets benched 2 periods into the tournament.

I have no right to talk about anything with how much my picks are terrible right now, but it's funny all the goalies went early and only Wallstadt, and Commesso are looking worth it right now from those who looked like sure things with Garand being the good gamble.

I thought of trying for 1 year you draft a team as your goalie instead of a specific goalie. Kind of like how in fantasy football(which I've never played so I could be wrong) you draft an entire teams defense. You're not guessing at who's starting, if you want to draft Canada's goalies you get them all. If Canada wins 5 games you get 5 wins. But I never tried it because that felt too powerful. 5 of the top 10 picks would be goalies probably, but we pretty much did that here this year anyway. I like the risk. This tournament is all about risk. No matter what pick you're making.

It's insane that the game the USA players were going to probably have their biggest day is now a forfeit. Sucks for anyone with any USA players for not only the fact that they are losing easy points, but also because they're now a lot more likely to end up facing either Finland or Canada in the 1st round.

I f***ing LOVE Kasper man. I want him to be a Leaf more than any other player besides the obvious ~13 guys.

Any chance he falls far enough?

Hard to say. Seems to be ranked in the late teens/early 20's most places, but his production in the SHL is solid, he's on the younger side of the class, and he's the complete package (and a true C), I have him in my top-15, but realistically he could be a top-10 pick if a team likes him enough.

A strong development team could really bring out his top-line upside.

Does anyone know what happened to Xavier Bourgault?

him playing tonight would certainly be helpful
