======================
I've had an idea. Let's decide who the greatest players in Avalanche history are.
  • You decide what "greatest" means.
  • Only judge players based on their Avalanche careers. This means no extra points for Sakic's time with the Nordiques, or Ray Bourque's time with the Bruins.
  • Poll will be open for a few days.
  • Each time you vote, suggest a player who should be added for the next round.
  • If there's no consensus on who should be added I'll just pick the next player who's played the most games.
  • Here's a list of everyone: Colorado Avalanche all-time player list at hockeydb.com

Legitimately, we might be nearing the stage to include JTC. 19th in team history in games played, 15th in goals, 23rd in points... he's also top 20 in all those categories for the playoffs in team history. Plus, he played a key role in the Cup win. He's not Drury impact, but just a step below that.

This is a rather sad post.

I hate that you are right, but you are. He probably a top 25 player in team history, especially considering that he was a big part of the cup win. Ugh

He’s even 41 in PPG. If Bednar hadn’t overused him, we might be talking about him like he was Yelle instead of the whipping boy

Other than the guys in the top 10, a lot of the best players (at least Cup Winners) in Avs history really didn’t spend all that long in an Avs sweater

That is kinda the insane part to me... he was a whipping boy for sure during his tenure, but he's got a great combo for being higher on this list. Also, Yelle probably wouldn't have had the massive support if he played during an era with a massive message board influence to pick apart his game and explain why he sucks offensively. :laugh:

Yelle played in the perfect era for his game. Message boards or not he just wouldn’t be viewed as favourably now that there’s such an emphasis on depth scoring

Yelle benefits from playing back when the third lines job was to go out and shut the opposition down and the 4th lines job was largely to go throw hits and do your best not get scored on (although the 4th line part hasn’t changed as much)

JTC is about to be wildly overpaid in Detroit but he’s a much better player and more key Av than we like to admit around here. Just like despite the unsuccessful era we’d be more likely to see Stastny/Duchene/O’Reilly (to a lesser extent) higher on this list if they had left on better terms and I say that as someone who is standing behind key and long term contributors from Cup teams over better players with less team success

Unfortunately for players like Compher and Holden they became whipping boys (and actually hated by some posters) not because of their play but because they were often misused. The blame for this misuse can either be put on the coach for liking the player too much, the FO for not providing the coach with the necessary players to bring down these guys down the lineup where they would be much suited for, or a combination of both.

JTC and Holden were actually very good players for us when played at a more appropriate spot in the lineup. JTC was just going to be too expansive for the Avs with their cap situation.
