When last the two countries met in a high level junior competition, Team USA defeated Team Finland*in overtime by a 2-1 score to win the gold medal at the 2015 U18 World Championship. Roughly four months later, Finland was able to exact a bit of revenge for that*loss by defeating the USA by a 5-1 score on the first day of the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Finland came out hot from the opening puck drop, jumping out*to a 4-0 lead in the first period on goals by defenseman Otto Makinen, forwards Eetu Tuulola and Robin Salo, and defenseman Otto Somppi.… read more

Team USA stumbled out of the gate at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, dropping a 5-1 decision to the country that they had defeated to win gold four short months ago at the U18 World Championship, Finland.

The Finns came out flying in the first period,*opening up a 4-0 lead that included two power play goals to cap off the first. The four goal outburst chased USA starter Stephen Dhillon from the net, allowing backup Dayton Rasmussen to turn in two periods of work.… read more

Although Team USA has medaled many times at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, they have taken gold just once in a tournament dominated by the Canadians. The Americans were hoping to take a shot a gold at the 2015 edition of this event, but got off to*a slow start in dropping a 5-1 decision to Finland on Day 1.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first period, the U.S. regained their composure for the final two periods but were only able to produce one goal the rest of the way.… read more

WOW Why send a team at all?

What a terrible team. Once again USA hockey fails at picking talent. I was at the tryout in Buffalo. I don't know what they were looking at when they picked this team.

Terrible scouting, USA hockey needs to get rid of all the scouts for the last 10 years. We just can't compete.

Send the NTDP team out there if you want to make a statement. At least east pick players that are in the Junior "A" ranks that have played against that kind of talent. Instead you have kids that played high school and Prep hockey for the most part.

What a joke.

They have a potential top 5 pick in Yamamoto, 2 possible first rounders in Wait and Tufte...high potential picks in Gettinger and Knierim..also a big fan of Rymsha and Crone..not sure what you are talking about as this is the type of team we normally send. A few high skilled players followed by a ton of USHLers. Plenty of CHLers on this squad as well. We don't send the USNDP players so options are limited here.

Dineen, Elliot, and Gleason are a solid top 3 on defense.

Not sure who you thought should be here but list your team you would have brought and let's compare.

Day 1 of the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament was not a memorable one for Team USA, and Day 2 wasn’t a great improvement. After dropping a 5-1 decision to Finland on the first day of the tournament, the U.S. then lost 5-2 to Russia, a loss that could leave them on the outside looking in when it comes to earning a medal.

The U.S. turned in a stronger first period against the Russians than they did versus the Finns, exiting the opening frame tied at one after a late goal off the stick of forward Casey Mittelstadt.… read more

Team Finland got off to a fine start at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, defeating the U.S. by a 5-1 score. The Finns continued their winning ways on Day 2 of the tournament, defeating Slovakia by a 4-2 score.

Finland won on the strength of goals from defensemen Robin Salo and Otto Makinen, and forwards Eeli Tolvanen and Otto Koivula. Defenseman Markus Niemelainen recorded two assists for the victorious Finns, while goaltender Niilo Halonen stopped 24 of 26 shots.… read more

With two losses in their first two games, Team USA has had an Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to forget so far. The U.S. squad has been outscored 10-3 in their two contests, with*five power play goals against included in their goals-against total.

Penalties have certainly been a problem for the U.S. to this point of the tournament as the Americans have totaled 76 penalty minutes in two games. That total includes four 10-minute misconduct penalties, an obvious sign of frustration from the players over the way their tournament has unfolded so far.… read more

Of the two countries hosting the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, Slovakia has struggled a bit more than the neighboring Czech Republic. The*Slovaks have dropped a pair*of games so far with a game against*the winless USA squad coming up on Wednesday, while the Czech Republic got into the win column on Day 2 with a 5-3 victory over Switzerland.

It has been a tough start for Team USA at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The goals have been few while the penalty minutes have been plentiful, which is rarely a recipe for success at any level.

The leading scorer for the U.S. is forward Ben Lown, who has registered two assists in two games as of Tuesday. After Lown,*a handful of players have one point apiece, not surprising given the low output for the American squad this time around.… read more

After struggling for the first two games at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, Team USA finally broke out of their offensive funk in the third game, posting a 7-3 win over Slovakia on Wednesday. The win will place the U.S. in the game that decides fifth place at this tournament, probably not what the team*was hoping for heading into the event.

Team Canada entered the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament as a strong contender for a gold medal, and they have done little to make anyone think otherwise after three games. Canada went a perfect 3-0 in the preliminary round at this event, finishing that round with a kick after a 9-2 pasting of Switzerland on Wednesday.

The preliminary round for Team Switzerland at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament was mostly one to forget. The Swiss dropped all three games, including a 9-2 loss to Canada on Wednesday to close out the opening round. The loss sends Switzerland into the seventh place game against Slovakia.

The Canadians made a 3-0 run through the opening round of the 2015 edition of this event, and will now face Russia on Friday for the right to compete for gold on Saturday.

Team Canada made a 3-0 run through the opening round of the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to secure today’s semifinal showdown with Russia. The Canadians have put forth a mostly balanced attack in this year’s tournament, with no one player being the go-to person when a game is on the line.
