If Vegas sign Marner as UFA this summer, they will need to shed salary.

What I understand is Karlsson won't be the guy traded for this sole purpose. Would Hertl be a candidate to make cap room??

If so, what would be the ask for a trade with the Habs?

His cap hit is 6.7 and goes until 2030. I think this would mess with the cap structure and timeline to much in Montreal to be a viable trade.

In 2 x years both Andreson and Gally are off the books with the cap presumably going up. Hertl has a decent contract but the duration relative to his age is the concern for the Habs.

I don't see Vegas trading him and the NMC.

What is Vegas’ motivation here? I get that the OP says if they sign Marner, but why would they sign Marner? How is that realistic? Marner’s contract in free agency will be a major overpay. Hertz’s contract (with the current retention SJ is paying for) is fair market/slight bargain. So why would you move a solid contract to bring in an inflated one?

Vegas like new shiny toys. And they need to make a move to keep being relevant.

NTC/NMCs haven't prevented Vegas to move players before. Odds are that if Hertl does not feel welcome, he'll agree to move. Would he be ok to go to MTL, that we dont know, but this discussion should be limited to the fact that Hertl has a NTC.

He has an NMC or even if it's NTC, he can only approve a trade to 3 teams. It was reported when he was traded to Vegas, it was 3 US teams.

And your point is? Player waive their NMC/NTC all the time. Would he do it, dont know, but if Vegas make the case that he's no longer part of the plans... he may perfer to go to a place that wants him. This is beside the question asked initially: what would be the value of Hertl to MTL in a trade.

A 6-3, 220 pound forward still in his prime who just scored 32 goals and is an elite face-off man and top “true” center who is signed to a deal that is probably going to look pretty damn good after this summer is over (and with a real salary that declines as he gets older over the length of the deal)? It would take a lot.

Any other team and we aren’t speculating to his availability. I get that “it’s Vegas” - but the idea that they are going to “get over the hump” by shipping out their center depth so they can add playoff hero Mitch Marner to the wing seems incredulous even by their standards.

Much more likely they accrue space by poking around the edges with Roy, Whitecloud and Hague or maybe even Barbashev or Howden than drain their Eichel-Hertl-Karlsson center depth. Maybe that doesn’t get them to Marner’s price point but “having interest” is all we’ve heard so far.
