Open Heart is an intimate profile of New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and his struggle to return to hockey after heart surgery. Lundqvist played fifteen seasons with the Rangers and is the only goaltender in NHL history to record eleven 30-win seasons in his first twelve seasons.

With incredible access to Henrik, his team members, and family, director Jonathan Hock offers a poignant look at the life and career of this hockey great while he confronts the biggest challenge of his life: a debilitating heart condition.––Dan Hunt

Likable guy. But he’s always had a huge ego. A charismatic Patrick Roy.

I remember a post on here I found believable that said Hank having a heart condition was a known secret throughout his career (wouldn't have been able to find it now without the Al Montoya shoutout), it was the first thing that came to mind when I heard about the documentary

Ok gang sorry I couldn't chime in earlier with work and some people may roll your eyes at me and say I'm making this up but this is not a new condition. Hank has been being monitored since he's a kid.

This has been known during his entire tenure with the Rangers.

I'm not connected to any insiders (other than the casual way I've known a few people who have covered the team and I never ask them about what goes on behind the scenes).

I was told by someone in the medical business who worked with the Rangers during the Renney era this information over a few beers. A casual acquaintance who I used to hang out with in my 20s. This was after Lundqvist was established but when Montoya was still here.

They said in these exact words "they may want to hold on to Montoya a little bit longer. Lundqvist looks legit but there is one thing I'm concerned about with him..."

I was asked under no circumstances to share with anyone because they could have been fired from that job.

It's been about 13-14 years now and that person is long gone from the org so......

What I theorize is the amount of stress and pressure he's put on himself and his body the last 24 months to train harder, change his diet, etc. It probably didn't help along with aging

I have a congenital heart condition and played hockey since I was a little kid & still do, so I’m very much looking forward to this documentary. Mine is also a leaky valve like Hank

Where can we watch this?
At the film festival tomorrow and Sunday. It was already shown once yesterday.

I imagine that it will be available on some streaming service in the near future. The same producer and writer made The Lost Son of Havana (about Luis Tiant) back in 2009 and that's available on Amazon Prime.

I actually am seeing the mutual friend (not the medical person who told me this back in the day) later this summer. I'm going to ask them if it's cool if I message the originator of this information on LinkedIn or we do a group text etc. if they've seen the doc. Although the person hasn't been affiliated with the Rangers for well over a decade, still want to ensure they're good to go.
