I don't know how you guys can make so many conclusions about whether Lundqvist is staying/going. Just let it play out and then give your thoughts.
Because speculating is what fans do on forums? Also, indications have been that the team would like to move on from Hank. It's only been discussed for dozens of pages here.

But people are like “good riddance Hank” acting like he has nothing left to give as a backup.

What indications? The speculation by beat writers? I don't think the Rangers have said much of anything other than they don't want to go into next year with 3 goalies and people are reading into that whatever side of the fence they're on.

I think people are tired of hearing about it. It is time for the team to move on. 8.5M for a backup is wasteful.

Spending 5.5M this year and then 1.5M next year for a guy that's not on your roster either year and having to pay someone to fill his spot is also "wasteful". It's not like it all just goes away with a buyout.

It seems like this has to be posted every day by somebody.

There are reasons to move on from Hank; cap savings is not one of them.

You have a point in regards to Hanks effectiveness as a backup since he is someone who gets better with a heavier workload. Will Hank be the main reason Rangers miss the playoffs? Not so sure about that. I mean, Hank was able to drag his teams to the dance with less than stellar backups for most of his career. Now it is Igors time to prove himself. Regardless of who his backup is.

I love Hank but I root for the laundry and I want this team to win. I don't want them to pay 8.5 mil for their backup goaltender. That money can be used a helluva lot better.

I survived Giacomin being done and leaving

I survived Richter being done and retiring

I'll survive Lundqvist being done and either leaving or retiring

I hope I'm around until Shesterkin is done and retired. At least there's a chance he'll win more cups than the other 3 combined.

The guy who's played all of 13 NHL games has a chance to win 2 Cups? I mean, I guess so, but I think we need to take a step back and see if he develops into a premiere NHL starter first. Then we can see if he can do that consistently like those three guys did for a decade or more. 3% of teams win a Cup every year and 97% of teams don't.

Personally, I'll be thrilled if he's a staple in net for the next 10 years and, sure, I'd like to win a Cup, too. But I think we're getting way ahead of ourselves here.

Well Hank sure doesn’t. Time marches on.

Buying out hank has nothing to do with money.

it’s the right move for BOTH the team and the player if he does want to keep playing and prefers to pick his destination.

he will not be back here I’ve said it for 2 months now but it’s just a matter of how and when he leaves this offseason not if

Then what is really the point? It's not like geo is much better, it's not like we have any better options on the FA market compared to Hank.... And since the expansion draft requirements have no minimums for goaltenders, you can just sign some AHL fodder and expose him instead. this is on top of assets you get from trading Geo

My opinion as well.

Look I love Hank but it’s time to move on. I will always appreciate how he carried this team many times and he deserves a big sendoff/appreciation. However I’m not trading Georgiev just to keep Hank one more Year.

Isn't that what this rebuild is all about? I've done, 24 and now 26 years, why not a shot at consistent winner?
No, of course the rebuild is about developing a team that is a consistent contender. Even so, winning multiple cups over the next ten years (next season will be Igor's age 25 season) is going to be very unlikely. We all hope they could win at least one of course and we'll see what happens.

Also, and I hate to throw cold water on the rebuild as I'm excited, generally positive, and hopeful on the future for the Rangers, but there still is a lot of things to be seen, that we are banking on, regarding the young players on the Rangers.

- Shesty still hasn't played a full year in the league.
- Kakko had a pretty bad D+1 season.
- Lafreniere hasn't played a game beyond Juniors.

There can be a lot of discussion on how to handle Strome, Buch, ADA, Henrik. Discussions on whether Kravtsov, Lundqvist, Miller, et al., will become productive NHLers, but I believe it really comes down to the above three. If they don't pan out and pan out big in NHL, then I don't see how the Rangers will be legit contenders for the next decade. Luckily I believe they will pan out but I won't give my hopes up too much until I see some more.

....sorry now back to our regularly scheduled program in the Henrik thread.

Hank and his situation would really have no influence on whether the Rangers trade Georgiev or not.

I just fail to understand what "getting rid of hank" really does for this team. We just cleared $5.7M in cap space, that $6.08M cap hit drops off from Shatt's buyout next year. What is the point of buying out hank to bring that number down to $4.58M? I don't really see what this accomplishes...

If Hank *WANTS* to retire then I understand the sentiment of not having him here, but buying him out might be the dumbest thing this team can do. He is THE athlete of all athletes, he is ultra competitive, he is solid, he is strong, he IS this team... Let him run this year out

I think the best reason I've heard is that Georgiev's value may be compromised by the current goalie market. If that is the case, and hanging onto Geo for the year is the difference between a 3rd rounder or a 2nd+, then we should certainly hang onto him. Then it becomes too crowded for Hank.

But if we get good value for Geo (22+Geo to Chicago for 17?), then we do it, regardless of Hank. And in that situation, the only reason to buy him out would be to get the extra ~2M this year to get under the cap, even though it costs us 1.5M next year.

Most indications are that he won't be back, but logically there seems to be many scenarios where the best thing to do is have him back up Shesty this year.
