They're both right up there, but Heiskanen has taken the lead pretty clearly i think. He's just go a little more breadth to his skillset. Both among the top tier of young defencemen in the league though, and honestly...just among the elite defencemen in general, period.

So is McAvoy's. Dude can be absolutely worthless in his own end really way too often for a "top defenseman." And I hear the same from Bruins fans all the time, especially in the playoffs in the last 5 years. Miro is more consistent defensively.

I think McAvoy fluctuates between overrated and underrated sometimes lol.

But his offense is not elite enough to be ranked where he is

There are certainly games the guy plays like an elite top tier D man, but then there are games he plays like a scrub 3rd pair in his own end. Miro is not elite defensively, but he’s consistently solid or above average while being consistently elite offensively.

Inconsistency from Mc aside, I agree his offense isn’t quite elite either. I stand by Miro being better in all aspects all things considered. Peak defensive ability no, but consistency defensively makes me lean towards him there. And yeah overall it’s no question, as the poll results indicate.

What makes Miro consistently elite offensively? He’s had 1 elite production season. Their numbers are similar outside of that year and McAvoy has always been the better ES producer, even during Heiskanen’s best year.
