After watching some of the games I've done a complete 180.

Initially I viewed the World Cup reincarnation as a money-grab All-Star esque tournament but that's not the case anymore as games with Europe and NA U23 have been fantastic.

Team USA's roster decisions is a downer but that's it.

Also, does anyone know what kind of monetary incentives the players are getting for cutting their summer break?

i feel exactly like the OP the hockey has been great but thats never been my issue with it. my issue is using the World cup as a replacement for the olympics. i dont like that. 1. because i like to see the absolute best on best in the olympics 2. i dont want hockey to be represented on a global stage with bum players representing their countries.

It will never replace or have bigger stakes than the Olympics but it's better than the world championships.

If it can be as prestigious as the "WJC", I call that a success.

Could not possibly care less. It's an artificial tournament poorly conceived and poorly promoted. Olympics is just a way better venue to sell the game.

Actually much worse.

Worse than expected ratings. Worse than expected fill rate on the seats.

Team europe is an insult by definition

If we get a u23 versus team europe/Canada final, just bring the shovels and bury this turd for good.

If anything Team NA or Europe in the finals makes it better imo

Because we all know professional sports organizations never hold World Cup events and they are always joke events never to be taken seriously.

You don't know what you're missing. Some of the best, most competitive, talent condensed, world class hockey you'll ever see in the modern era.

Your loss.

Hasn't changed at all... still watch it for good hockey. Still have no passion towards any team including Finnish team. Just good hockey. Seen all games except FIN-NAT.

The bright side is that there is FIN-SWE tomorrow. Those are always fantastic.

So far, it's been more fun than a bench full of Hudlers.

Smart choice.

My initial stance was that the gimmicks would make for a less meaningful tournament, which I still believe, but I was and still am very interested in watching Team NA play.

lol you people kill me - integrity of the Olympics and the World Cup of soccer  IOC and FIFA make the NHL look like saints in the 'cash grab' department.

This tournament is legit ENTERTAINMENT and COMPETITION.

The Sochi Olympic hockey tournament was TERRIBLE, BORING - last night's performance by Team North America was better than any game at Sochi

$1m to winning team, $500k to 2nd place team.

Also, the PA is getting 50% of the profits, so the union can decide how to disperse that money to their membership.

Yea I like it more than I thought I would.

The Olympics are still better and far more meaningful though. Winning the World Cup is still just on par with the IIHF world championships every year

Not really, it's super gimmicky and while some games are entertaining, it's only a glorified exhibition contest. Have real countries on Olympic ice, then we can talk.

It's okay, but it's only because I'm hockey starved after a long summer. I quench my thirst for hockey by watching this and the KHL. The Olympics are better, I haven't changed my mind on that.

Pretty much this...I have to say the level of hockey and the passion displayed has impressed me greatly.

I'm watching it but in terms of prestige it's behind olympics, world championship, u-21 and u-18 for me. Some nice pre-season hockey.
