Has there ever been a coaching change as ineffective as Carlyle's firing?

When the Leafs fired Carlyle at the beginning of the month they were the highest-scoring team in the league along with the Lightning and for all their inconsistencies they still held a playoff spot. Now of course Carlyle's tenure had its problems, but since his firing the Leafs have won a single game, are 10 points out of a playoff spot, and what was once the saving grace of their flawed playing style, their offence, is now comically inept. Has there ever been a team which got that much worse after firing a coach who was supposed to be part of the problem?

Yes.

1995-1996 Senators replacing Rick Bowness with Dave Allison

After getting off to a good start with a 6–5–0 record, the Senators would then lose their next eight games, which ended up costing head coach Rick Bowness his job, as the club replaced him with Dave Allison, who was previously the head coach of the Senators AHL affiliate, the Prince Edward Island Senators. The Dave Allison era did not last long in Ottawa, as the club would only win two of 25 games (2–22–1) before he was replaced by Jacques Martin

I thought it was a dumb move as soon as I heard about it, they literally haven't been able to score since firing Carlyle. I just hope they tank for McDavid now to be honest.

It's easy now to look back on it, but at the time TONS of people were saying that they should change coaches as what they were doing was not sustainable.

What have been the last few coaching changes for the Oilers? Those are the answer.

My old man emailed me when Carlyle was fired and Horachek or whatever was hired. He said that this was the fall guy for the tank to get a top pick. I was like "nahh this guy did well with Florida with a less than awesome roster"

Looks like my old man might be right yet again.

In the win column, sure, the change wasnt a good one. In a more long term perspective its letting us see who can create offense without cheating defensively. If it leads to appropriate moves at the deadline, I'll be fine with a lost season to clear out the right dead weight. A high pick won't hurt either.

Give me a break. This was no tank move. They weren't going anywhere with Carlyle either. They were already trending downwards when they fired him. They were barely hanging on to a playoff spot after having a good cushion early in December. I bet they would be exactly where they are at now with Carlyle too. The firing was an attempt to try to save the season, if anything. If they wanted to tank for real, they would have left Carlyle alone. The team was heading down the ******* anyway.

Dallas Eakins says hello. The guy knows hockey, but was useless as an NHL coach. The worst part was that people said we should keep him, just so we didn't have to change coaches again...

Its one of the least surprising in terms of how ineffective it has been.
