He had a lot of hype when he was drafted, many were saying how he would have several 100 pt seasons and a few Art Ross's throughout his career. Calling him an elite #1 center who has the potential to be one of the best players in the league. Now that we have seen the best of him, do you think he has lived up to the hype he got?

He’s the least hyped 1st overall pick I can remember in a loooong time.

He got some hype after a good rookie season, but he was considered a pretty weak 1st overall prospect at the time of the draft. I don’t remember anyone saying anything like that.

Wasn't really hyped that much, definitely not to the point of MVPs and Scoring Titles like you say. But no he hasn't. At this point he's sort of just a middling NHL player so I can't really see you can say he lived up to 1OA expectations.

When you take someone first overall you expect a difference making star who is a definite first line forward, top dman or elite starting goalie. RNH is a really good second line forward but no, he hasn’t lived up to his first overall selection.

Not from the people I knew, they all had big hopes for him and even members of the media were saying how this guy would be a staple for the Team Canada roster for years.

I agree, he wasn’t a hyped first overall, heck he wasn’t even rated number 1 by most services until around March year.

......this never happened.

I think the most optimistic fans at the time thought he would top out as a ppg player with a few 90ish point seasons. He had very little hype compared to guys like McDavid, Hall etc., and I seem to recall there being like 5 guys getting legit 1st overall discussion (Landeskog, Larsson, Coutourier, Huberdeau?), RNH just had more people leaning his way.

Certainly he's a disappointment for 1st overall, but he's still a good player and I don't know that any of the guys that would go before him in a redraft would have developed as well in the Oilers dumpster fire.

The TSN crew. They were saying how this guy was going to be an elite player because of how good he was in junior and playing for International tourneys (World Jrs? Can't remember).

I'm sure it's in your memory as happening somehow. What I'm asking for is something that's preserved and others can review.

Otherwise, you've set this up as a bash thread. "I remember Louis Domingue being called a future star goaltender. Today, he's a backup. Has he lived up to expectations?"

Is there anyone in the first round of that draft that has been worthy of a first overall pick?

Of course not. 1st overall picks usually become elite superstars, many of whom become hall of famers.

He's still a quality player though.

That's true. I do think he made an impact in his rookie year but I think he was brought in a year too early and could have served another year in the minors for his own development.

Also, when he came into the league he had huge expectations to lead the Oilers offense as they didn't even have Hall until the year after.

No, he has to be viewed as a disappointmen not just since being picked first overall but also based on his performance in his rookie season.

Scheifele and Couturier are pretty close based on their current level of play, but both took a while to reach their peak, which is not something you usually expect from a 1st overall pick.

2011 was a weak draft year and Nuge is currently sitting 2nd in career points behind Landeskog out of all the players taken in the first and second rounds. His numbers certainly arent inflated given the tire fire teams he has played on. He is a very good, not great player. Disappointing for 1st overalls in general, sure. Disappointing for his draft class? No. Not by any objective measure.

He’s probably not an ideal number one but he’s a pretty good player. There are far worse guys picked 1st overall.
