Gretzky was more impactful. His arrival turned the Kings around from the fourth worst record in the league and a minus 41 goal differential to the fourth best record in the league with a positive 41 goal differential.

I noticed some of the Lemieux voters are not consistent. They would be normally cry foul if someone won the Hart while missing the playoffs, as Lemieux did in 1987-1988.

Sometimes I get the impression that some posters just pick whatever argument they can think of to support a player they like instead of assessing players or situations consistently.

Based on thought patterns they've displayed previously, sometimes you expect a certain poster to support a particular player in a comparison, but then they do the opposite.

From what I’ve seen people have been voting for best season, not most valuable.

Well if going by hart definition, then it’s most valuable to his team, not most valuable.
Just to clarify, this series is about which player (who won the Hart Trophy) had the better season. The Hart Trophy is simply the demographic for the tournament, the standards for the trophy itself (such as value to one's team) aren't part of the voting criteria.

Lemieux. By that point Gretzky was more about taking what the other team gave him, and making them pay, while Lemieux was much more likely to go out and make things happen on his own. Gretzky also had more talent to play with that year than Lemieux did the year before.
