Never change Saratoga. One sexy venue.

Days 1 through 4:

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Good weather and good racing led to good business at Saratoga during the opening week of the 2024 Saratoga meet.
All-sources handle for the first four days of the 40-day meet was $97,417,144, an 18.3 percent increase over the $82,353,292 handled during the first four days of the 2023 meet, according to figures provided by the New York Racing Association. Ontrack handle was $13,788,831, a 1.9 percent increase over the $13,527,169 handled in 2023.
Paid admission was 102,028, down 1.5 percent from the figure of 103,561 last year.
Though hot, it has been mostly dry in Saratoga so far this summer. Five turf races were moved to the dirt on Thursday’s opening-day card due to 1.23 inches of rain that fell the previous night. Opening-day itself was dry as were the three subsequent racing days.
There were 43 races -- 16 on turf -- conducted opening week with field size averaging 8.47 horses per race (betting interests averaged 8.30). During opening week of the 2023 meet, there were 41 races held -- 11 on turf, eight off -- with an average field size and betting interests at 7.27.

It is understood that Baltimore is going all-out for Preakness 150 and somehow could incorporate the area's football and baseball teams with potential usages of their stadiums for starters. While the Preakness is being shuffled in 2026 to Laurel, next year's prize number of 150 will be the biggest annual event to hit Baltimore in years. That is based off initial planning. In the mean time, don't forget Laurel.

Chapercraz wins Hambeltonian @ the Meadowlands;

Just to clarify: Hambletonian Maturity.

The $1,000,000 Hambletonian
is August 3 and the card starts with a rare day post time, perhaps the biggest harness race in America.

Saturday's card, two nights ago, was wildly successful with 10 purses $100,000+, Over $5,000,000 was bet. Astonishing figures continue for Meadowlands.

Three Suffolk Downs (MA) regular riders appear on this list.
  • Dodie Duys was tough-as-nails. A name from the past. I recall when she bit a female jockey at Calder (FL).
  • Jill Jellison a perpetual personal favorite. Sad ending to the life of someone universally lauded as a good soul.
  • Tammi Piermarini who was riding into her 50s at Finger Lakes (NY) up to a couple of years ago but I don't think ever recovered from a starting gate injury.
  • Diane Nelson rode at Suffolk but IIRC was more of a Rockingham (NH) rider before breaking out in New York.

First post at Monmouth is 12 pm on Saturday. The Haskell card will be revealed today. Monmouth advertising family fun which includes best dressed couple, clowns, face painters and pony rides.

Clowns to the left of me, face painters to the right, here I am stuck in the middle with you.
