Has there been a recent space/fantasy shooter with a narrative story that has been a massive success?

Valorant is essentially an FPS MOBA. There is no narrative driven single player campaign.
Overwatch same thing.
Fortnite same thing.

Doom Eternal(?) and it's what? 4-5 million copies at this point? And I doubt Xbox would be happy with numbers like that for something that's supposed to move console units.

It feels like the narrative driven space shooter isn't interesting for the audience anymore. For a narrative shooter people prefer Call of Duty which cycles between the recent past and a speculative near future... and not space suits, low gravity situations and alien races.
There’s definitely a vacancy there and if any series can fill it it would be Halo. Doubtful though. 343 went 0/3 with releasing a complete game at launch with a fun campaign.

If they can do that with the UE5 that would be amazing obviously. Would be even more amazing if they could do it without a battle pass and make the game rated “M” again. Make the games a little more serious and gory like CE was to capture the tone. Even Infinite which I didn’t completely hate was off a bit from being less adult.

I’ll believe it when I see it and at this rate we won’t be playing a new Halo game until 2030. Maybe they remake CE, that would be cool.

Xbox would be very happy with 5 million sales because their sales are so bad they don’t even publicly release sales numbers anymore

Despite its low player count, Halo Infinite is still one of the most played games of its genre lol. Nobody really cares about these kinds of shooters anymore outside of COD. I wish they did as I would love to play a new Titanfall game, but that's just how it is these days.

Space Marine 2 came out recently and has already seen a sharp decline in players (30,000 concurrent). The Finals has the next highest player count on Steam with 15,000. After that you get to the sub-10000 games like Halo.

I'll play the new Halo when it comes out but I'm not anticipating it or anything.

Halo Infinite added a "Delta Arena" playlist for H2's 20th anniversary. It's awesome.

-Community made Forge maps from Halo 2 that are excellent
-"Legacy" movement which means no sprint or clamber, going back to the H2/H3 movement style
-They added a new gun, the MA5K, which is essentially a slightly beefed up H2 SMG that you don't duel wield and it works really well within the mode

Been having a ton of fun playing Infinite for the first time in a while. Officially the playlist is done on December 3rd but I'm very sure (can't find the tweet) that because it's so popular it's here to stay. Would love to see a ranked mode of it as well as some H3 maps added in.
