Saw this article about our scout Donald Audette who joined the Habs in 2012. Seems like his early years (2013-2018) didn't amount to much coming out of the QMJHL. I don't know if I'm just optimistic but our Q prospects since 2019 are all looking like they're on track and developing well. Curious if this reflects Audette learning over time or did the Habs drafting philosophy change?

It's so tough to compare drafts 5+ years ago with the most recent 5 drafts. But the way I think about is in the 5+ year old drafts the Habs got 1 NHLer (Andrighetto) out of 7 mostly later round picks and I think theres a decent chance at a bubble NHLer in Reway if it hadn't been for his illness. Most years if you get 1 nhler + 1 bubble/depth guy in the 6 picks past the first round that would be considered successful.

It's hard to predict what will come of the second group but after being here for almost 20 years Id say the odds are that only 1 of those guys becomes a regular and maybe 1 or 2 others become a depth/bubble player. I won't predict who they will be in this thread.

I will say that I think using late round picks on Q overagers is a great strategy that is happening in your recent group vs the old group. For a while it seemed like many of the best undrafted FAs came from the Q, so predicting who they could be and drafting them in their 19 yo season is a good move. Looking forward to seeing if they do that again this year.

Pierrick Dube and Joel Teasdale weren't drafted, but they are 2 younger guys from the Q who have done well and helped in Laval.

Even if they just end up being career AHLers, it is nice to help our minor teams with quality guys like this instead of plugs from the Q like Antoine Waked.

I think Lapointe had an influence, I think perhaps they added minor support staff to insulate Audette (maybe? I'm not sure) I also think HuGo coming in and implementing development processes didn't hurt in the slightest, polishing up players who might not have continued to trend upwards.

Seems like it got better when Lapointe came on board.

Lapointe has been around since 2012 when Bergevin started. Originally as Director of Player Development he later became Director of Player Personnel in July 2017 - That's about the time where we seem to take on a different philosophy with our QMJHL picks. Lapointe is currently listed as our Director of Player Personnel and Amateur Scouting.

Interesting that he out-lived Timmins and Bergevin.

Minor Support Staff = ?

Do you mean additional scouts or is that in reference to additions to the player development & analytics guys like Ramage, Bouillon, Poulin, Nicholas, Pellerin, LeBlanc and Boucher.

Since Lapointe has been given a bigger role and Churla left the team in 2020 we seem to be doing better with development (too soon to evaluate drafting but it looks better). Don't know if ML got a role to play in that but it doean't look like he was part of the problem. I have always been very critical of Churla and i always thought people were giving him too much of a pass because of Timmins.

When you are missing Getzlaf, Bergeron, Giroux and Marchand for A.Kostitsyn, Urquhart, Fischer or White, you deserve to stay a pitiful team for years.
