If the places of these 2 teams in the standings continue to stay relatively the same, would something like this be possible?

RW Clutterbuck (2.75M, UFA)
D Hickey (2.2M, 2018 UFA)

~for~

C Desharnais (3.5M, UFA)
D Beaulieu (1.0M, RFA)
2017 1st rd. pick

No thanks, we don't need another center unless it's a direct upgrade. Clutterbuck is a key cog to the team, he isn't being moved. Hickey/Beau is a wash to me, we really don't need him, we actually will have too many D once Pulock comes back up, likely CDH/Hamomic gets moved for a forward packaged with Strome.

...what sense would it make to hold on to a pending UFA and even if Hickey/Beaulieu is a wash, then advantage Beaulieu, because he'll still be an RFA at the end of his contract.

Desharnais would be irrelevant since he's a pending UFA and simply won't be re-signed if we don't need him (we don't). Added to balance the cap.

The first is nice. I sure wouldn't expect more for Clutterbuck (or Clutterbuck+Hickey). So what am I missing? Sign me up! Provided that

the places of these 2 teams in the standings continue to stay relatively the same,

What hole in Montreal are you looking to fill?

There are other players available, but right now, we aren't looking for a Dman and no centres except for a top 6 centre and even that we don't really need...Nelson is close...more like a 2b/2c top 6 centre.

Wait, we are giving the best player (Beaulieu) AND are the ones that add a 1st round pick? Yeesh, no thanks for me.

I like Clutterbuck but not at that and Hickey isn't really special, lots of dmen like him are available for kinda cheap.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking today. I know Desharnais is injured at the moment, and I don't think NYI is ready to throw in the towel just yet. I was thinking this could be a possibility down the road.

My thinking is that we need more size up front for the playoff run to compete with bigger teams. Clutterbuck is big, physical, experienced and strong defensively and is not a black hole offensively either. Value-wise, based on past precedent, NYI could get a 2nd for him at the deadline. So for the playoffs Clutterbuck >>> Desharnais.

Beaulieu is 3 years younger than Hickey and cheaper (for now), but Hickey is the better defenseman right now. Slightly quicker, much better passer, more consistent in his own end, although less physical. He's been playing ~18-19mins/game for a few years now and could compliment Weber (or anyone on our right side). One for one it's probably an even trade.

Desharnais is only for cap reasons, so his value in the trade would be pretty much neutral if NYI is out.

So the Habs could likely get away with offering a 2nd instead of a 1st.
