I agree generally but first line wingers still carry a premium. That level of player would be a downgrade on Boeser.
If the choice were Boeser or a top 4 D then I agree the downgrade may be worth it. But I’m not sure they should be in that situation - should be enough space to have both by trimming a bit of fat (Desharnais, Hoglander) and still have room to fill out the depth. Would much rather ditch a few players lower on the roster.
I’m not sure I’d prioritize a third line centre over Boeser (I guess depending on who that may be) - management has been able to cobble together strong depth pieces up front and can hopefully continue to do so.
Those guys were 3 and 5 years older than Boeser when they let them go.Yep. He's closer to a Palat or Killorn than a Hagel or Cirelli.
Trade him to Minny 50% retained for a haul.Leaning towards not wanting Boeser back at any capacity, honestly.
I don't really care if there isn't an imminent replacement available. If there isn't, you allocate that money to finding more defencemen, or finding a center so we can put one of Pettersson/Miller on the wing.
I also think it's debatable that he is our best winger. DeBrusk and Garland have been clearly better this year, and Garland has been better in 2 of the past 3 seasons.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Alec Regula who went on waivers from BOS yesterday.Alex Nylander on waivers ... honestly, I'd take a shot at him.
Actually did some cap math on next season for the first time in forever, and yeah you're right, if they can clear Desharnais and Hoglander, you can bring back Boeser at $8M and have about $12M left over to augment the roster.
Alex Nylander on waivers ... honestly, I'd take a shot at him.
It's not about who's been better for 27games though. If last year was any indication who would you rather have? And he's still coming off a concussion where he missed 7 games.Leaning towards not wanting Boeser back at any capacity, honestly.

The closest comp I can think of is Max Pacioretty, who Vegas acquired when he was 30, gave up Nick Suzuki for, and re-signed for $7 million per year until he was 35.
Last year was a career year and should not be the only indication of whether we should bring this player back. It's not just that DeBrusk and Garland have been better this year, but they were both better in 2022-2023 as well. Obviously, there is time for Boeser to start playing better, and I may adjust my opinion if that happens. I'm just saying I disagree with the notion that we have no choice but to bring him back. It's not about who's been better for 27games though. If last year was any indication who would you rather have? Garland is the next year so more tough decisions to come. It's not like you just get to bank on him staying when he's from back east and may decide to grab a bigger role closer to home and more money.
That's where I'm at. Depth players such as tweener middle 6 wingers and #6/7 defenseman are easy to acquire or backfill. Using the cap on quantity (Sprong, Desharnais, Forbort, Hoglander and Heinen) over quality was unnecessary. It all adds up.Were in an enviable spot a RW. Boeser Garland Lekkerimaki is a great mix and should be tenable for cap hits with JL having 2 yrs of ELC and then cost control years.
Desharnais Forbort Hoglander Heinen can all get punted to make room before you start axing our best players
Are you really bad at math or what ? better would jump at 10 million for three years he would still have a career and would make six or seven for the next six or seven years. And come out ahead. And the idea of 11 million for five years is insane. It just doesn’t work that way at the end of it he could China deal that would give him 5 million for five years.this is the real issue with a boeser extension
an 8 year extension seems likely to go bad at some point but boeser really has no incentive to take less years. i can't imagine the canucks want to go like 11m/5y instead of 8m/8yr and that's probably what it takes. maybe they can get him to agree to something like 10m/3yr but even then i dunno why he'd do it
however, the canucks are already weak at the wing and they can't really afford to lose boeser who is easily their best winger. they can't afford to wait on lekkerimaki or some other prospect and i don't see any realistic free agent scenarios. they kind of have no choice but to go with boeser
That's a good point. I'm back on board the resign Boeser train. It sucks we have so many useless contracts again all of a sudden. Were in an enviable spot a RW. Boeser Garland Lekkerimaki is a great mix and should be tenable for cap hits with JL having 2 yrs of ELC and then cost control years.

I see both sides. At the end of the day i would prefer a more active player that can drive play for the money. If they could come up with a Boeser for Mercer type move and get a younger more versatile guy and free up cap for the D i'm all for it.Last year was a career year and should not be the only indication of whether we should bring this player back. Garland is a lower-profile guy and I think will be a better bang-for-buck than Boeser.
a player with a long history 50+ point seasons before they got him? edit: oh shit, you guys are talking about Boeser, not Hoglander. yes the Reinhart comparison is very apt here.Did Florida smartly cut bait with Reinhart?
Those last 2 guys got locked up after their bridge deals when they were like 25/26. Brock is going to be 28. Sadly, he just wasn't a long term max deal coming off his bridge at the time. But, that's life.Yep. He's closer to a Palat or Killorn than a Hagel or Cirelli.

yeah i thought we we were talking about hoglander. "oh yeah Vegas and Tampa would totally trade them after that 22 goal season." but boeser? our genius armchair braintrust thinks we're the tampa bay lightning but we're actually talking like the buffalo sabres.Career stats
