As was stated today by Dahli on 650 the AHL dmen in the system and Willander will take 3 or 4 years to be NHL regulars/ready.
So with the emphasis on accuring cap space the team has to find a player with a cap hit of less than 1 mil.
Even if they trade Hoglander that leave less than 2 mil.
If they go for someone more expensive they would require the other team to retain and that would cost extra in sweeteners.
If that scenario did happen it is probably for a rental because of the cap crunch next season so wasting assets for nothing essentially or borrowing on tomorrow for temporary relief today.

With the constraints of the cap and roster figures that leaves Jiricek as the best option even if they trade tomorrow the assets they use can be reflected in that Jiricek will be around for awhile so not just thrown away.

Jiricek, like Necas wanted out because he knew he could play more and better, this also happened with Trouba. It was a failure with Dubois though.
So i just listened to the hit. Dhaliwal said they think they have guys 1,2,3 years away. He said they think Willander is going to make an impact in the not so distant future.

According to Donnie and Dhali, the Jackets have told a number of teams--including the Canucks--that they simply don't have the assets to acquire Jiricek.

The Jackets enquired about Wilander early on. But trading him is a total non-starter for Vancouver, as it should be. There's just no 'quick-fix' on the horizon for the Canucks blueline.

They're just going to have to tough it out, and hope something pops closer to the TDL.

Yup, this was always the reality. There are only so many of Jimbo's dumb moves they could/can fix at once. We were always destined to struggle with cap space and that won't change next year, although the plan will be to address the defence after the forwards were focused on this offseason. Unfortunately you can't just conjure up cap and prospects out of thin air. This was the right move. Stop gaps until it can be properly addressed.

Ya I'm not a fan of rentals but I do believe management was intending to extend Zadorov and Lindholm. But again simple DD should reveal what the player's intentions are and the asking price. With Zadorov he made no secret that he wanted out of Calgary because he wanted to sign an extension. I won't rehash this too much but Zadorov's ask before the playoffs was pretty much 100% what he was reportedly asking from Calgary and the Canucks were willing to give Zadorov what he was asking for at the end. With Lindholm that was a difficult signing to begin with. Lindholm reportedly rejected a 8x$9M offer from Calgary. Was it because he didn't want to sign in Calgary? At the end I'm not sure what managment was expecting. If Lindholm proves to be a great fit alongside Petey he ain't signing 7x$7M. Were we willing to offer more all along? Hoping he struggles?

I see M-Petey as a similar situation to Zadorov. This is a player management should know well. It shouldn't be difficult to find out whether M-Petey is willing to sign in Vancouver vs hitting free agency. And if he's willing to sign what he is seeking, what he will likely get as a UFA, and assessing with reasonable certainty the chances of getting a deal done.

If the Canucks are trading a significant asset like a 1st round pick for M-Petey then get the extension done. Give him a retroactive NMC if that's something he wants.

No one in their right mind thought Lindholm was re-signing here and certainly not Allvin. He stated as much when he acquired him. No one can purposely afford to go out and sign $7 mil third line centers anyway. That's absurd. So glad we kept our money to spend more wisely on players we actually need.

Depending on the length of the injury, it looks like the boys are going to have to compete for the wild card spot instead of going for the division.

The strategy to acquire a long term fix on the blue line shouldn’t change, but unless it’s a slam dunk the first might need to be held back - that pick probably has more value at the draft next year to acquire said piece than it will at the deadline.

Agreed. At this point I don't think it's prudent to worry about this season. A permanent solution should be the goal even if it takes until the offseason to accomplish and we shouldn't make a panic trade to save a failing year. The wheels are falling off this train.

Id hate to move him because of the potential but I wonder if a package around Willander and our 1st could bring Dobson in to the fold.

When healthy:

Hughes - Hronek
Soucy - Dobson

Definitely going to be a trade today. Holiday in the states on a Friday? Allvin special.

Not going to speculate on why Miller is away but usually where there smoke there’s fire.

Biznasty’s report of continued issues between Miller and EP. Those reports have been going on for years now.

Miller mentioned by Staple is new report about the NYR asking about Miller.

Miller is a heart and soul guy you win with. Love the player, but he’s American and it would not surprise me at all if he just wanted to be closer to his family and where he grew up. Before anyone jumps all over me this is a very common occurrence.

I’m not saying anything is going to happen but would I be shocked if Miller stayed away and got dealt before he comes back? No not really.

I don’t even know what a package would look like. He’s an excellent player on a great contract.

Friday 4PM trade announcement after the game would be great, Allvin! I’ll start sifting reddit to see if there’s any insiders
inside/r/‘s

Also my cat farted and to me in the other room it sounded “the rift between Miller and Pettersson is that they both think they should have been named Captain and they both think the other is an asshole for thinking so #c4”

He's great. But his emotions get the best of him. You only need 2 eyes and a brain to see the tension between he and EP. And before EP... It was bo... And after EP it will be someone else.

This is Dahliwal being Dahliwal. A couple of weeks ago I did an analysis of age of entry of D men. I didn't save it

So I just now took a quick look at number of D-men for each age (20-26) playing regularly in the NHL this year:
20: 3
21: 6
22: 10
23: 18
24: 19
25: 14
26: 18

It's pretty clear that the peak is reached by age 23 and that a large number of the players, greater than 50%, of those that are going to make it are already playing regularly in the NHL at age 22.

So, what does that mean in the context of Dahliwal's comments and the Canucks prospects?

D-men 23 and under who have a realistic shot of playing NHL games:
Kudryavtsev 20 (turns 21 in 2 months)
Mynio 19
Pettersson 20 (turns 21 in 2 months)
Willander 19 (turns 20 in 2 months)
McWard 23

McWard is already trending to below average. If he was going to make a significant impact at the NHL level he should already be playing regularly. Mynio is a very long shot but he has time.

So, Dhaliwal's comments really only apply to Willander, Pettersson, and Kudryavtsev. I think it's fair to expect Willander to play regular minutes next year at age 21 but certainly the following year at age 22. Kudryavtsev is already one of the top D-men on his AHL team. I think it's very reasonable to expect him to play regular minutes the year after next, a year in which he turns 23. Likewise, if he's going to make it, Pettersson should play regular minutes the year after next, a year in which he turns 23.

Barring suprises and not counting replacement level players, the players in the organization that have a more than decent chance of making an impact at the NHL level are somewhere in the 18 to 24 month range, with Willander possibly sooner.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here but it just annoys me when RD makes off the cuff comments that aren't grounded in reality.

I've always thought the most likely explanation for their poor play this season is that they are each both injured AND mentally ill, and Pettersson is probably sleeping with Miller's wife which is why they both deleted their Instagram accounts.

lol last time they didn't want to trade anything of value - i doubt they'll offer anything good this time around

It's been 2 weeks, and no one wants Drury's bloated contracts/aging vets for all-stars:

I doubt they do anything until after the road trip and know Miller’s timeline.
But they do December 6th
Canucks do not think willander is 3 years away. If anything they probably will have him in the nhl once his ncaa season is over
Lekkerimaki was NHL ready some thought last year, 7 games this year and sent now down to the AHL get stronger and used to professional game
Willander might be an asset of tomorrow but the need is now.
If Jiricek all they really lose is the time needed to get him into some NHL games, he has never had the upside of Jiricek.
The Canucks are back east and can watch Jiricek play now.
He fits under the cap space now, he has top pairing experience now, he is only one year older and has a big upside. He would be an upgrade of 4 of the AHL dmen on the current roster.
They could trade for him before the Detroit game.

If there was a Miller deal it almost has to be with Columbus as well, they have numerous young players, Buffalo could be another but there are many out there but Miller has the hammer with his NMC. He has a house in Pittsburgh, is a native of Ohio, liked NY.

If there was a Miller deal then trading to an eastern team would make sense for a western team.

But what would a Miller trade mean in Vancouver beside the loss of the player? A question of WHY would be or should be loud. Would that have an effect on the coach with another trade demand under his coaching after the numerous requests in his past?

With the right team if Miller is a trade possibility then that opens up a fair bit of cap space as well and changes the dynamics quite a bit.
IF Any Miller deal is done it will not look like a Canuck "win" in the short term but maybe in the long run.

Yeah, this is f***ing stupid.

But it's also why it was f***ing stupid to frame the JT absence the way they did instead of just saying that his upper-body injury wasn't healing and needed rest. It's just invited all kinds of idiotic speculation.

I think it’s a combination of physical wear and mental wear and tear. The way they announced it wasn’t terrible per se, as I think Miller needed a break not just from play, but from the team.

But the asinine speculation that Miller has such an enormous issue with Petey that he decided to take his ball and go home shows the absurd length talking heads and some fans will go to to push freaking weird speculation.

I think the way they announced it was tone-deaf to this market and how stupid things can be here.

If this was in Florida, sure. Nobody would care. But in a Canadian market when you leave the door open even a crack for speculation there's literally a parade of idiots running through it immediately.
