Lookiing back now, I actually can't believe the Benning era extended past 2016. That was the worst year I've ever experienced watching hockey. Absolutely nothing went right. Then they lost the draft lottery and picked one of the worst busts in franchise history, right before the best power winger of his generation.

99% of the time, he's out of a job when Willie D gets shitcanned.

The set of transactions between the 2015 trade deadline and the summer of 2016 is the worst year or so of transactions for any GM in the history of the NHL, and it isn't particularly close.

- Sutter trade
- Gudbranson trade
- Eriksson signing
- Juolevi draft pick
- Sbisa extension
- Forsling trade
- bungled Hamhuis trade

Plus a whole lot of other smaller screw-ups. It was insane that he lasted another 6 years after that.

I would never trade a prospect that is as complete as Willander appears to be. Those guys are usually safe bets to hit their potential. That's how you run the risk of getting very burned in a few years, especially since we need his ELC to mitigate the OEL bullshit. Trading someone like Brzuskewicz, who has fallen off a cliff offensively in the AHL, was a much better decision because he had clear holes in his game despite the production.

Yikes. Thank goodness we traded him. Could you imagine the consternation, angst, and wide sweeping panic?

Jacob Trouba & Chris Kreider
  • Trouba wouldn’t waive NMC for family reasons before and won’t now
  • Any team looking to acquire Trouba will talk to his agent to gauge interest
  • Believes Trouba would be interested in going to the Western Conference but only during the summer and not during this season
  • Kreider submitted his NTC list in July
  • Thinks Drury has sent emails to other GMs letting them know that Kreider and Trouba are available
  • Possibility of trading them feels “knee jerk”
  • Teams are starting to feel desperate and some of that comes from ownership groups and this applies to the Rangers owners
Michael Matheson & David Savard
  • Young defencemen in Montreal need to be insulated
  • Kent Hughes has to be listening and talking
  • Thinks they are looking for a piece that will help them now
  • Have heard both players from other GMs
Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Not a lot of pressure on Dubas to act now
  • Marcus Pettersson’s name has been on the trade market for a while
  • Dubas is looking for young NHL players, prospects, and draft picks
  • One of the most active GMs
  • Penguins will now pivot to a “managed teardown”
  • Every UFA is on the block
San Jose Sharks
  • Cody Ceci is definitely a player Grier would be listening on
  • Mentions Predators as maybe being interested in Ceci
Blue Jackets
  • Calls coming from everywhere
  • Won’t make a deal unless someone steps up
Chicago Blackhawks
  • Hasn’t heard Connor Murphy’s name out there
  • Kyle Davidson has to be willing to consider pretty much anything
Anaheim Ducks
  • Keeps wondering about Cam Fowler
Ottawa Senators
  • Zub injured for 4-6 weeks
  • Not suggesting that any of their healthy defencemen are in play
  • Have to do something to shake-up that core
  • Don’t have the assets on the blueline
  • Keep an eye on them
Demko
  • Team expects him to make a start later in the road trip
Miller
  • Not much to update
  • He needs time and the team isn’t going to push him
  • Unlikely that he’ll be ready to rejoin the team after the road trip

Looking at that is just so sad. Like going in order:

Sutter trade: Penguins got the better player in Bonino, and a 2nd round pick that turned into Jordan Kyrou for the Blues (I can't remember if it was this one or the Gudbranson trade that led to it).

Gudbranson trade: Gave up a future top 6 winger who put up 40 goals for a bottom pairing dman.

Eriksson signing: Led to not signing Toffoli or Tanev, and resulted in the OEL deal which lost us Guenther and tons of cap space to this day.

Juolevi: I told my brother before the draft we're going to hear London Knights, get excited for Matthew, and then draft a bust in Juolevi. It happened, I threw some stuff at the couch, and he still laughs at me to this day for being right

Sbisa: Imagine targeting this guy in the Kesler deal to begin with.

Forsling: Lost a future #1 dman for a player who became a throwaway in the Sutter trade.

So we gave up a cup caliber middle six center, a future 40 goal scorer, a future #1 dman, a future franchise caliber winger, and a future top line player, for a bunch of below replacement value guys & a cap nightmare that haunted us then and still does to this day. Obviously the draft picks are a bit of a hit/miss thing and are being used to prove a point, but holy moly.

I wish I could be this incompetent and get paid millions for it, like you said it was easily the biggest fumble I've ever seen from any of our management teams in my lifetime. Wasted what should've been great years watching this team in my 20s to actively hating everything about it until Alvin came onboard.

Only period I can think of that gives it a run for its money is Jim Benning circa 2020-2021.

- OEL trade
- Poolman signing
- Pearson re-signing
- Dickinson trade and re-signing
- Two picks for Madison Bowey
- Disaster 2020 offseason chasing OEL and ignoring everyone else
- Holtby signing

15/16 might have been worse but 20/21 was more consequential.

In there they also got fined for tampering, and had the NHL CC all the other teams on an email explaining how ELCs work when they rejected the team's initial contract for Tryamkin, which are obviously more minor but honestly even more embarrassing.

Oh, also this was in that period:

Benning: A couple nghts ago, I spun the wheel for two hours and I don't think we picked in the top three once, so I was kinda put off... so the next day, I woke up and did it ten times, and we picked #1 three times out of ten, so that gave me more hope

I forget which year it was, but they also needed help from the league getting under the cap for the start of the season.

I'm fuzzy on it, but I think that was the start of 15-16 when, IIRC, the league was like "yo you didn't have to waive Corrado if you do this instead what are you doing" or something like that.

I think his quip about how analytics are like vitamins instead of a major component of a diet was also in there, which like I get what he's saying, but it just raises a lot of questions about his diet.

Bummer that Miller won’t be ready after the road trip.

or he's so out of touch he'll be a Canuck any moment now

Idiot face spends all his time sucking up to and glazing the Oilers' organization, and they give him free scoops as a result. He had them bringing that piece of shit Stan Bowman onboard from the second it was announced by the NHL that he was eligible to return.
