People throw out Konecny's 8 x $8.75m as a comparable, but he's outperformed Boeser by a fair margin over the past 3 seasons and is a year younger. He's scored at a 39 goal pace, Boeser has scored at a 30 goal pace.

If Boeser's agent wants to sell 8 x $8m+ as a home town discount, the Canucks should walk.

Konecny is also a much better all-around player and elite PKer.

Konecny is a guy who drives a line. Boeser is a (very good) complementary scorer.

Agent isn't doing their job if they aren't asking for top of market term and money. People will freak out that the number being thrown around in the same way they did with Hronek & 8 million.

Pretty confident they'll come to a decent compromise, as long as he doesn't get wind that Minnesota is willing to offer him a stupid amount of money & term in free agency.

Boeser's agent making it more or less known he wants 8M+ is good news in a sense. Very rarely do players sign for the exact amount they initially asked for. Look at Shesterkin demanding 12+ but wound up taking 11.5

My guess is Boeser signs for 8x8 exactly. Maybe very slightly under but unlikely.

While it's easy to say this, who are we replacing him with? The UFA market isn't exactly booming with 30-40 goal scorers. We tried replacing Zadorov by committee and look how well that turned out. Granted, I didn't love him at 5M regardless.

And no, Lekkerimaki is not the replacement for Boeser right now. Maybe in a few years but we can't afford to wait "a few years" in the hopes our prospect becomes what we already have.

Yep. Agreed. That $8M is the number the agent wants people to hear is good news. Likely the Canucks settle in the $7s.

It's up to the front office to decide how to replace him but if players are going to tell the market they are taking a discount and then don't, by pure principle the team needs to move on.

That said, there's plenty of time. If Boeser can resume scoring at a 40 goal pace when Miller returns it becomes more palatable.

The upside is they've got a starting number to go by and they can use that to decide whether to start negotiations.

Not Canucks related but some interesting names on the Senators and CBA talk.

Colorado Avalanche
  • Mackenzie Blackwood trade almost happened last week
Ottawa Senators
  • Brady Tkachuk is not available
  • Are aware that the team needs to win and will look at making moves
  • Josh Norris has generated interest from other teams; Calgary has expressed interest in the past
  • Some talk of Thomas Chabot and Drake Batherson being in trade talks
  • Senators want to do something
  • Tkachuk’s NTC doesn’t kick in until next season
  • Claude Giroux and Shane Pinto could be trade options
Board of Governors Meeting
  • NHL and NHLPA have had loose preliminary CBA discussions
  • Will be begin earnest CBA talks around the time of the 4 Nations Tournament
  • NHL’s goal is to have an agreement in place by the summer
  • Salary cap will go up to 92.5m next season based on the current CBA
  • NHL wants to smooth the jump in cap after this CBA
  • Suggests an increase to 95m for next season as part of the smoothing process
  • Looks like they will increase the numbers of games in the season to 84 and reduce the amount of preseason games
  • Start the season in early October and end the playoffs in the middle of June instead of the end of June
  • NHL and NHLPA are on the same page; don’t see any work stoppages

Looking at numbers for defenders (ES, min 1000 mins across 23/24 and 24/25 combined), one thing that stands out is that the Canucks have the two worst defenders in the league in primary assists/60: Desharnais and Soucy.

Desharnais has zero primary assists in over 1200 minutes played. Soucy had one in 1000 minutes played.

Even a guy like Juulsen had three in under 700 minutes last year.

Ott, no surprise. Have not made the PO since 2017. Want to win.
Tkachuk's got a NMC, which begins July 1, so they need to be sure on him well before that. Not the same leverage as Matt since he was RFA and 1 year from UFA, so if he didn't like the destination could have said I'm just going to arb and leaving after 1 year to scare off teams. Brady is under contract for 4 more seasons.

PA is stupid IMO if they agree to go up to 84 games just to knock down Pre-season games. Vets don't play more than like 3 games. The extra games are for the AHL tweeners, kids, and PTO guys to play. NHL should decide to reduce those games on their own.

Get something better than that to go up to 84 games.

Interest in Batherson and Pinto but also assume so would many teams.

And 84 games? Season is already long enough.

I actually think that $8 million is too much. I am a big fan of the player something around $7-7.5 would be my ball park. Konency is not only not a comparable but he was overpaid. A number starting with 6 is where the Canucks will likely start but will likely not get. To me the number has to start with a 7, preferably in the low 7's.

Adding onto the Strickland stuff from the previous thread, I just listened to the clip and what he said is he doesn't understand why people are labeling him leaving the team as "heroic" or "celebratory" when we don't know the real reason why he stepped away. He added that there are people in optically tougher situations that simply wouldn't have the option to take a break from their job if things weren't going well.

I do get his opinion but I just don't understand the point of going down this road, seems like an unnecessary take. I also haven't seen too many people talking about how he's a hero for taking a mental health break considering nobody knows the details.

That's also a weird straw man he's creating because we aren't talking about normal people.

Also, I'm not sure anyone is hailing Miller as some kind of hero...I think the only person who (perhaps I missed the parade of media kudos) praised Miller was Patrik Allvin, who would likely have more knowledge of what Miller's struggles entailed, so he would be more inclined to acknowledge it positively if it merited it.
