- If I am a surgeon and kill a patient during an operation, I got fired and maybe go to jail
The amount of lives destroyed: At least one, possibly more, if we count the kinsmen.

- If I am an architect and my construction falls down cause negligent design...I got fired
The amount of lives destroyed: Depends on who were inside or near the building. Potentially many.

- If I am a chemist, and put the wrong compound in a medicine...I got fired
The amount of lives destroyed: Potentially many.

- If I am a judge and put an innocent in prison I won't get fired but would get filed
The amount of lives destroyed: At least one.

- If I am a pilot and my plane crashes, I got fired (If I survive the accident)
The amount of lives destroyed: At least the number of passengers of board.

- If I am the head coach of one of the main hockey nations, and my team loses 5-1 against one of the (improving) but lesser teams, after being consistently underperforming...what I should expect?
The amount of lives destroyed: Zero.

Do you follow the logics?
Do you?

It is a professional activity (rather well-paid) exposed to public scrutiny. Hence responsabilities apply.

If you see Lauri in sauna in a couple of weeks, please tell him that he is ruining the dreams of many.

I cared about the World Cup. The goal montage was something else, sure, but the position our gang ended in was a shock only because the gang didn't outdo their paper ranking this time like they usually do.

And if the result of this tournament is bad, I say good riddance. For the umpteenth time.

But it's pretty gosh darn tasteless to compare this to activities that could potentially cost people their lives.

Maybe the universe, and some gallian pagan gods if there is some, had decided this game before it started, with Presidental elections ending the same day ect. If we win Czech today I select to believe this. If not, the nightmare is very real.

Wait...

What? Not only did france win but they scored 5 goals?

o.O

Has France ever even scored 5 goals in the whole tournament before? The hell is going on with Finland?

The hell is going on with Finland?

Just a dire lack of depth and terrible coaching. The Finnish team is mostly made up from scrubs playing in the domestic league (which has been in a downward spiral for more than a decade), coupled with mediocre KHL players, who are nowhere near of being elite stars in that league.

Look at how quiet the Finns are in the NHL playoffs as well. No depth, apart from a few rising stars. Finnish hockey has had serious issues for a while and the few Ahos and Laines won't fix that overnight.

A lot of small things. Underestimated the opponent, perhaps the motivation wasn't fully there, coaching made some mistakes, lines weren't optimal, the team's going to need more time to gel, and so on and so on.

None of those things alone never explain a result like this, but this time there were enough of them present to create a perfect storm.

Perhaps they can fix some of these things, perhaps they can't. Future will show.

Thats too bad. Hopefully if the Tournament is a wash they atleast let Pulju play some big minutes.

That's one of the few positives about this. The hopeless situation at the beginning of the 3rd forced them to give Pulju a chance, and he immediately looked like someone who should maybe have been there from the beginning.

Though we can't really blame 'em for not having him out there from the get-go, since he pretty much sucked in the preliminary games. Jet lag, most likely. But that's in the past. He should definitely receive plenty more TOI in the upcoming games.

People suddenly care about the World Cup because it makes a nice convenient excuse to bash the coach some more.

And this is not to say the coach shouldn't be bashed, but he should be bashed based on what happens two weeks from now, if need be. Not what happened last August or in a bunch of meaningless games over the season.
You are confused. The World Cup maybe was a joke tournament to you, but it wasn't to the players. Therefore how they performed matters, because they were playing it like any other game.

I'll wait for the players' memoirs before I concede this point.

Also, it seems like it's you who might have got a tiny bit confused. The point was not really that the World Cup is irrelevant in relation to the WHC because not too many people cared (even if they didn't). The point was that the World Cup is irrelevant in relation to the current performance, because it's a different environment. If Finland's coach deserves reprimand, he deserves it because of what happened here, not because of what happened eight months ago.

Of course, starting last season, and 2014.
Remember when we beat Russia in 2013 and Canada in 2014 ?
We also beat Slovakia that year and forces Czech to OT.

France can finish anywhere between 8 and 14 any year. This season, for the 1st time, there's no major injury so why not a quarter finals, especially when so many NHers declined to come.

If by no one you mean not more than 10,000,000 people, then I maybe believe you, but still rather not.
The average European TV ratings for the annual IIHF World Championships are about ten times that, so yeah, we can say that pretty much no one cared.

Anyway most of all I blame the Finnish reporter who complained that there was zero hockey articles in the French press when the tournament started. Nice jinx, Saarinen!

Doesnt matter if we cared, the team played like ****. Unless marjamäki told them to play like **** on purpose, it doesnt really work as an excuse.

Marjamaki told them "Tight 'Famous Five' game, no individual creativity whatsoever allowed", which is close enough I think.

So I guess they were understandably mistaken that they and their dog were supposed to be solving criminal mysteries among picnicking in the British countryside, and it allowed the French own them worse than in Hastings.

You literally labeled those WC games as meaningless in your previous post, so.

I would say that if Finland didn't perform well there, plus it doesn't look great here either, there is some connection that could be made obviously. Anyway, I agree with you when you said that the coach should be judged/bashed based on what happens two weeks from now. Finland isn't looking good now, but I rememeber the 2014 tournament where they started slow too and ended up in the finals. The tournament is long, every game is different, who knows what happens here in two weeks.

I am fine with putting things into perspective, and who am I to say how many actually watched the tournament, I don't know. But saying no one cared is just simply not true. It's like saying that no one in Europe cares about the World Juniors. It's simply not true, no matter how relatively small the audience is compared to the Worlds, you would never use this description of the situation there, but you very well should, if applying the very same logic.

I remember 2014, too.

Because when it started badly, basically everyone called our squad team Jokerit in hf, in IL comments ect (erkka selected alot of Jokerit players and was Jokerits just signed coach).

When the team made to semis, i posted a GDT picture "Jokerit vs Russia". It got some those same people offended and saying its not because of jokerit, who said it was Jokerit when they had rough base-round. Those were golden moments. Loved the in-your-face factor for all Jokerit haters.

At least this year, no one has called this team Kärpät.

Literal-minded, eh? Fine. If there really was an European person somewhere who cared, even if just one... I guess you could say it isn't "no one". I can give you that, if it makes you feel better.

It was a gimmick tourney, but still a best on best one, and a good argument against Marjamäki nevertheless.
