There is no "rule" to do that. Its an unwritten rule showing class and sportsmanship, thats it.
And even more - if you somehow managed to score more, than your opponent, you should score for your opponent to make a game more even. Too bad this great unwritten rule was lost and nobody is classy anymore...

Meh, what does that rule serve? It gives the losing team false hope. Fierce competitiveness is the way to go - destroy your opponent if you can. Only proper reason to go soft is to keep the troops rested for a possible back to back game.

That doesn't make any sense and more so - I've never heard of this "unwritten rule" anywhere. If a team can score 10, they'll score 10. If it's 20 - they'll get 20 on the board. Everything else is the weak making excuses for themselves and crying about their "unclassy" opponents while jerking off to their own amazing, phenomenal class.

Pfft, that's a rule for people who don't know sports. If Russia took it easy on Italy, that would mean showing no respect, not the other way around.

He means that if you are clearly superior to your opponent you shouldnt gang up on them and try to run up the score when its already obvious whos gonna win.

When goal differential is such an important factor in the standings then I don't fault a team for trying to get as many goals as possible.

The Russians looked at it as a chance to practice their chemistry, that's all. It's silly to claim that a team has to stop scoring, no team in their right mind stops playing all out.

Hockey doesn't work that way. You can't really slow the game down and play keep-away with your opponent like soccer for example.

It is insulting to stop playing hard when the opponent does not match your effort. Its like openly expressing pity. Its condescending, and it just make it worse. Be classy, no taunting, but if you are able to score a goal, by all means do it.

Why not voluntarily just use 3 skaters. I don't think that Italy would notice or suspect that you are calling them out for being weak sisters!

Anyone have any info on how Gavrikov played? He has been my favorite prospect since draft day the year we took him. The guy is a stud that our GM said he feels he can make our team out of camp next year.

Russian defense played OK vs Sweden, so did Gavrikov, as to Italy game, it wasn't that kind of game, you could use to evaluate your defense.
