Russia fan here - thought it shouldn't have counted, but all questions to the judges :).
The Swedish main commentator didn't think it should've counted according to the rulebook (that flick at the end), the colour commentator (a former coach) thought it was a good goal. Main commentator also thought it looked kind of fine, but the rulebook had something to say about it. Both also agreed it was a tricky situation and the long wait for the decision was understandable.

As for myself, I think the goal was fine. He didn't kick the puck, he more of redirected it with his skate. Even though he kind of kicked it at the end with that flick, the blade was still planted in the ice, sideways. The whole reason for disallowing goals with a kicking motion is because skate blades are dangerous and hockey players can't kick with them. Looked fine to me, he didn't endanger anyone.

I think we can safely say there's a top-six now rather than a top-seven.

They're still capable of playing well vs the top-six, but Slovakia really has fallen on hard times.

Good game by Team Russia! Defensively there were some questions but Vasilevsky managed to have the last say :). Also respect to Team Slovakia, I'm sure they'll get back to a solid level in due time.

I think that top-seven ceased to exist quite a long time ago, one silver medal doesn't mean anything.

Not that I argue with the Big 7 being long gone, but the 2012 WCH actually showed us that we can still do well enough when our best players show up and we're giving our best effort all across the board.

Now we only have 6 (I believe) players from that year on this year's roster.

We never had that many elite good players that we could afford such a long list of nominees declining the call and still having a competitive team, not even in the golden era. Granted, our average players were usually better than those of Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and so on, but those days are long gone. Most of the participating countries can put up a fight against one another.

As for Slovakia we can only prey that our U17-U18 kids will work on themselves very hard and about 10 years from now we could theoretically win something. Until that time rank 8-10 is our place.

Reality is sad.

Yes even more without Kovalchuk. Because with him there would be more goals in russian net.

Ovechkin and Kovalchuk to me are very similar. Same type of player. Right handed shot on the left wing. High volume shooters. Questionable verstatility. When the shots stop going in they become useless.

yeah, all the hype among na fans around kovalchuk returning to the nhl makes me cringe a little.

Who should we call ? Hossa, Gaborik and other veterans who will end their hockey careers soon and even don`t want to play on IIHF tournaments anymore ?

Gaborik is 3 years younger than Hossa and can still attend a tourney or two before hanging up the skates.

But even disregarding Hossa, Gabby and Chara, there's plenty of other players this team is missing. Even if their skill level is lower in some cases, they would still be a significant power boost for our National Team on this WCH:

Sekera, Meszaros, Granak, Marincin, Jaros, Baranka, Daloga, Hrivik, Tatar, Panik, Dano, Jurco, Cehlarik, Viedensky, Marcinko...

These are the first names that came to me off the top of my head, and I'm there's plenty more to add.

Nikushin over Kaprizov:shakehead ... It is only one game, but he sucks ...

I can't remember if I posted this on this thread, but Kaprizov was in the press box for tonight's game talking with Kuznetsov and Orlov, still wearing his Russia blazer, so he is still around and presumably available if needed.

But does that mean that Znarok can take him in ???
