And we just saw one of those beauty back handers by Drai, stupid crease rule

He is. Doesn't change the fact the german TV guy is about to **** his pants every time Drai touches the puck..

They are just really happy, that they have someone they can not only call an "NHL star" (because everyone in the NHL is a star to them) but a "star in the NHL." You should see German TV lose it over Nowitzki.

But overall he's one of the most loved Oiler players. Wearing my Draisaitl jersey right now.
That's true. He really pushed for most loved players behind McJesus.. Which will also result in becoming the 2nd best paid player behind Connor..

Yeah, you're right. I remember Leopold from "NHL Powerweek" from years (well, soon decades) ago, he's been the same screamer back then..

I really don't mind that. If you want to make hockey more popular in Germany, you need a face. And not some fourth liner that's regularly being scratched but a real star.

So I think they're right to hammer that name into the casual viewers' brains.

Lol @ the German commentators.

Goldmann: Nice outlet pass by David Wolf.
Schwele: Or as we call him ... Leon Draisaitl.
Goldmann: Oh, sorry.

I don't mind it either. It's pretty cute how excited everyone is about it.

Agreed. He is the face of German hockey.

I frequently catch myself remembering Sturm being better than he really was. Must have been all the propaganda during national team broadcasts. :D
Sturm played way bigger than his skills, for sure the hardest worker in German hockey I remember.. No Hecht, Goc² or else had similar success in NA through his work ethic..

It also works. I frequently catch myself remembering Sturm being better than he really was. Must have been all the propaganda during national team broadcasts. :D

They almost have me brainwashed into thinking Greiss is some sort of all time goalie legend rivaling Tretjak.

But all joking aside, they are doing well for the most part. They simply need to give some perspective on non-DEL players. Like anyone who isn't a pretty serious Pens fan would know who Tiffels was.

Drai looks almost finished in closeups. I think, he is really tired.

Between World Cup, NHL regular season, playoffs, and now World Championships, this is something like his 104th hockey game in the last year. He SHOULD be exhausted, haha.

Just a quick note: the German commentator was not Michael Leopold ;)

Leopold ist a Sky now and hasn't been a hockey commentator for quite a few years. The play-by-play was done by Basti Schwele, who has been the main commentator for both Sport1 and Servus TV over the last few years. He does sound very similar to Leopold, and he even looks a bit like him, but they are not the same person ;)

As for the game: solid job, good win. Latvia will obviously be a much tougher opponent than that. And one can only hope that Grubauer will be in goal, because aus den Birken didn't exactly shine today either, though he got better later on. He is usually solid, but solid isn't what this team needs. And what it definately can't afford is letting in bad goals.

I'm not really sure why he got the backup job anyway. He did look good in the DEL, but that wasn't all that difficult on the team he played on. I thought Brückmann was generally more impressive.

I have to confess, I didn't know him before this championship (and the short time before).

Living in Krefeld I knew him before. All the youth players from Krefelder EV are for some weird reasons stuck at Gesamtschule Kaiserplatz all together(Noebels, Akdag, Riefers) in Krefeld, so even if you don't want to you still get to follow the youth player's carreers just for the fan girls in school^^

Looked up the numbers yesterday, tonight's game has been his 107th this season. :phew:

After 106 games, 10 hour flight and jet lag still scoring and showing some special plays ... this guy is special. I have no objections to hype him as the face of german hockey ;)

Kahun should really play in NA in my opinion

There is actually little reason to do that. I've just read the other day that German players' salaries are getting more and more inflated and have no corelation to the players' skills any more. The reason is that every roster has to have a minimum of German players and since there is little talent to pick from even weak players salaries get inflated, basically just for beeing there and filling roster spots. Basically rules of the free market.
That was actually one of the reasons DEL teams made a minus of 16 million last season. Spent to much for talentless falk

Thanks for the information. I really didn't pay much attention to the broadcasts so far, except for the games themselves, and the voices really are similar. :help:
