Prime Gretzky and Prime Ovechkin each have one shootout attempt on Prime Hasek.

What happens?

As always, I take Gretzky.

From what I can gather, well past his prime, especially when it comes to goal scoring Gretzky, at age 36 and 37, had 2 goals on 3 shots in 2 games versus Hasek during the 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 seasons.

We remember those seasons as the two that Hasek won his 2 Harts and 2 Pearsons, as well as collecting his 4th Vezina in 5 seasons.

They obviously weren’t shootout goals, but 2 goals on 3 shots when Hasek was on top of the world is noteworthy.

I have no doubt in my mind that Gretzky is the one to score over Ovechkin on Hasek in a shootout because he actually scored goals on the man when he was far removed from his prime.

I'll say neither score since shootouts are fairly flukey and the average shootout percentage is only about 30%.

Anything can happen with 1 attempt.

Give them 100 attempts and guess how many times each would score is much better.

I would love to of seen Ovechkin using 80's hockey sticks and Gretzky using late 2000's hockey sticks.

Ovechkin's average level NHL player in shootouts.. That's more to do about stickhandling /patience/creativity than shooting.

no way Gretzky scores against modern goalies the way he did in the 80s.... wasnt much of a deker either.
Mmmmmm I don't know he was pretty shifty and smart. Also we're talking Hasek not a current goalie. And if you say Hasek but current training then have fun explaining how the highest IQ and shifter player that also broke every goal scoring record doesn't score with modern training and equipment.

Neither Gretzky or Ovechkin are great shootout/breakaway scorers.

Gretzky relied on being in the right place at the right time for most of his goals, because he could seemingly see a play unfold 5 seconds before anyone else.

Ovechkin has relied on a lethal shot and lethal one-timer for most of his goals, and therefore isn't the best at scoring goals from in close with creativity and patience.

So I think Hasek would stop them both more times than not.

Lemieux, on the other hand, would have a reasonable chance at beating Hasek.

He had a very good shot, superior stickhandling, exceptional reach, and knew how to execute every move and deke under the Sun.

If I could choose 1 NHL player in hockey history to take a penalty shot or breakaway with the fate of the universe at stake, it would be Mario Lemieux.

This is a poll of percentages. In a sample size of 1, anything could happen.

Both Gretzky and Ovechkin are going to be well under 50% in shootouts (I think Ovie is career 31% or so). There are far inferior players who are better at this aspect of hockey. So I guess chances are Hasek makes the stops.

If the stakes were really high - no player in history I'd trust more in a clutch situation than Gretzky (possible exception of Lemieux, especially for goal-scoring). So I voted him.

But honestly - i've never played hockey in my life and I could probably get lucky and score on Hasek once. I agree with the poster above suggesting 100 attempts and see who scores more - that's more representative.

Pretty much this, most players score well under half the time in their S/O attempts so statistically odds are neither of them make it, against arguably the greatest goaltender of all time.

OV isn't great in shootouts. Gretzky is too smart to miss I'd say.

Gretzky's penalty shot attempts:

1981 vs. Pierre Hamel miss
1982 vs. Michel Larocque miss
1982 vs. Pat Riggin miss
1983 vs. Richard Brodeur goal
1984 vs. Don Beaupre goal
1991 vs. Peter Ing miss

Gretzky would have shot against Hasek in the 98 Olympics. But he wasn't one of the top 5 shooters for Canada.
