Great job, thank you for the effort!

Amazing how Gretzky tops every list between 2 and 9 games (and not a co-lead at that)! It's so weird how Mogilny's 92-93 is such an outlier in his career (and in many others' as well, to be fair) in terms of goal scoring. I mean I know the reasons why that season was such an anomaly but still, man...

Kurri's four hat tricks in seven games (in the playoffs!) is wild, but then you have Gretzky's 10 in 43 games. Wow. And even having a category of "Shortest number of games between four 4 goal games" is pretty crazy.

I'd point out a small omission of Ovechkin scoring 8 goals in 3 games and 9 in 4 (Jan 2020, you have included this timeframe in the longer streaks).

Thanks! And for the heads up, added it to the list as well a few others I missed like Rick Tocchet absurd scoring burst at the end of '88.

Gretzky's name pops up a ridiculous 142 times, followed by Lemieux at 108 times. Next most? Bossy & Kurri way back 42 a peice.

I think most of those marks are pretty safe but I wonder if now that the game is opening up a bit if someone might match him on say the 3 or 4 game mark. Afterall Laine potted 11 in 4 just a couple years back, and a random guy like Claude Larose had 9 in 3. I could see Matthews or McDavid potentially doing something crazy like that sometime in their career.

Very fun to look at, thanks for all the hard work!

Those Gretzky and Lemieux guys might have been pretty decent.

It's kind of funny that Ovechkin is making a case for best goal scorer ever and yet he's notably absent here lol
his name appear 12 time I think here, sometime the only name that is not from the 43-44 to 44-45 seasons or the 1980s to 92/93

Here is one hot streak which is missing from the list:

12 games in 5 games including three hat tricks.
Wow I never even heard of this guy but yet he once put up a 5 game goal scoring binge that has only been bested 3 times in past last 100 years!

Gretzky, Gretzky, Gretzky.... Its boooring.
Yeah but often as his name pops up, which speaks to his incredible constancy, the margin of his domination isn't huge by any means. Up until the 25 game mark he only bests his pears most of the time by a single goal. And I honestly though he would own every single one of these unofficial records but there's a few he doesn't.

Amazing work! I love reading through these kind of lists.

I also learned that Petri Skriko exists. It's crazy that despite him scoring 14 in 9 games in 86-87 he only finished the season with 33.

Literally all of them except one entry are from the same season though
Same for Richard a single season outside the war year, would be interesting to see a list that exclude the 2 high scoring war year and the 72-73 to 92-93 higher scoring era, people that would pop up (Bure, Ovechkin, Richard, Selanne, Esposito) would mostly quite special with the rarer Laine type popping up.

Scoring just changed so much that it make those raw number list a bit meh (which I imagine why we excluded the Joe Malone, Newsy Lalonde era here, they would probably have almost all the records).

Didn’t Gretzky Bossy Simmer all have a huge run each trying reach 50 in 50 one year?

This is fantastic OP - thanks for doing the work and sharing. Very fun to see.

It's kind of funny that Ovechkin is making a case for best goal scorer ever and yet he's notably absent here lol

I've always said that Ovechkin's peak doesn't hold up to the very best goal-scoring peaks. Imo he's not top 5 for peak. Close after that, just not top 5.

But - Ovechkin's strength is his consistency, and he's #1 by a long shot there. That's important too

I would have expected more Brett Hull.

Brett Hull seemed to score a lot more consistently - whereas Gretzky/Lemieux would score in bursts. It doesn't surprise me to not see him atop some of these lists to be honest.

Didn’t Gretzky Bossy Simmer all have a huge run each trying reach 50 in 50 one year?
Bossy and Simmer were both chasing the 50-in-50 in 1980-81. Gretzky was (first) in 1981-82 (actually calendar year of 1981, since he hit 50 in December!).

Gretzky beat 50-in-50 in 1981-82, 1983-84, and 1984-85.

What's funny is that few people even know he scored 50-in-42 games in 1983-84, such was his scoring dominance then. It was like, "Not 50-in-39 again? Meh, not headline worthy...".

(Nice to see this thread bumped.) Since @TheStatican mentioned it, that Rick Tocchet streak near the end of 1987-88 is utterly bizarre.

So, Tocchet's then career high (after three full seasons) was only 21 goals in 1986-87, and in 1987-88 he scored his 17th goal of the year in game 54, so he was doing about the same.

But thus began a six-game goal-scoring streak for Tocchet. After the aforementioned 1 goal (vs. the Islanders), he then scored 13 goals in his next five games., including three hat-tricks in four games.

Then, only 2 goals in the next eleven games to close out the season (RS + playoffs).

It's definitely one of the most unusual and incredible scoring outbursts in NHL history. The only other compatibles in streakiness would seem to be Petri Skriko and Patrik Laine's '87 and '19 seasons. Though both those players at least had more of a goal scoring pedigree prior to their streaky seasons and both of them would slowly fall off thereafter them while Tocchet's career took off.

Skriko had 5 goals in first 18 games and then exploded with 12 in his next 5. Then he goes on to score just 4 goals in his next 40! Before having a second goal scoring outburst late in the season with 9 in 5 and finally finishing with 3 in 8. Outside of those two outbursts(20g in 10gms) he had just 13 in 66.

Laine might be even worse, starts off the season with 3 in 12 before getting on a roll and scoring 6 times that amount in the same number of games; 18 in 12, 11 coming in just 4 games. Then he scores just 9 goals in the rest of the way in 55 games. And 4 of those goals came in a mini 3-game burst at the end of February. Outside of those two outbursts (22 in 15gms) he had just 8 in 67! Though he did at least manage to rebound in the playoffs with 3 in 6.

Let's not forget Dave "Lummer" Lumley. During November/December 1981, he scored goals in 12 consecutive games. Over a 16-game period, Lumley scored 20 goals.

Prior to this streak, he'd scored 5 goals in 46 games, and after it he'd go to score 32 goals in his next 182 games.
