A beloved but aging former heavyweight champ of the rock music world, the Forum in Inglewood, is making a comeback. Officials at Madison Square Garden Co. will unveil plans Tuesday for the historic arena that include a multimillion-dollar face-lift and a January opening with an iconic California music group.

In making its first business venture west of the Mississippi, MSG is wagering that the Forum can once again vie for the biggest names in pop music against a younger, larger and well-heeled opponent, Anschutz Entertainment Group's Staples Center.

The act that will kick off a new era for the Forum when it reopens Jan. 15: The Eagles, who will play three nights. The move pairs the quintessential Southern California rock group with a concert venue that's seen little action over the last decade.

It's such a dump now. And that smell, that smell is still there. And honestly, I'd rather be in DTLA than Inglewood nowadays. It'd be awesome to have a minor league team playing there though.

" the renovated Forum's goal is to be the nation's largest indoor facility designed with music as its top priority. "When it was a professional-sports arena and a concert arena, it had to serve those two masters," Dolan said. "Now it's constant entertainment and there's no compromise.""

Will always hold a special spot in my heart, first place I ever saw an NHL game. But boy was it a dump, I remember going to that first game against Boston at SC and it felt walking into a palace compared to the Forum.

I haven't been to SC in years. Does it look like it needs some renovations now? It's gonna be 14 years old. Wow, time flies so fast.

No, not at all. And the same can be said of Boston, Chicago, Nashville. Even Anaheim, St. Louis and SJ which were built about a decade before Staples are still in great shape, the advances in building technology from the 60's and 70's to the 90's and now must have been pretty remarkable.

The Joe in Detroit is a dump, but they are getting a new arena near Ford Field and Comerica Park. The other huge dump in the league is Nassau Coliseum, saw a game there in 2006 and it horrible, actually reminded me a bit of the Forum, but they to will be heading ti newer pastures in Brooklyn.

Pretty sure that Honda is in the process of getting some upgrades but it's still a nice building. Much better food options and cheaper than Staples which always pisses me off.

Yeah, the food at The Puddle is much better than it is at Staples Center. It's the one thing they should copy.

A pre-season game at the Forum every once in a while would be pretty cool for nostalgia, especially if the Kings don some throwbacks from the purple and gold and Gretzky eras. But seeing how it is owned and operated by an AEG rival, that is probably unlikely to happen.

i've been an advocate of this for years. each year have one of the Legends games at the Forum. depending on the player they could wear the corresponding P/G or B/W/S uniforms, while playing in the old barn.

of course, if you do the math: 18,118 vs. 16,005 you can see why you couldn't do that... (unless of course it was a Monday night game vs. Columbus ;) )
