Grade/Discuss Travis Hamonic

My really only important comment on him is that I would like to see more offense from him, without sacrificing his defensive game. Guy gives it his all, night in and night out.

A-

Agreed. Either A- or B+. Leaning towards A-. Easily our 2nd most important player. Can't wait to see him keep getting better and better. I also expect the offense to improve. Even if it doesn't, his point totals should rise just from our lineup improving/developing.

I'm a big fan of Hammer.

Gave him a B+ because of his struggles early in the season. He was banged up, but still, he wasn't playing well. Thinking of him roughing up Malkin in the playoff series brings a smile to my face. He's the JT for the defense. He's only going to get better too. Love Hammer!

Are we grading these on last season or just overall?

I believe it's for the season.

I gave him a B+. Played great down the stretch and he stepped up in the playoffs.

High expectations for him in the next few years. I see him getting more confident entering the O zone. Has a great shot that I wished he used more.

His contract will be a steal if he stays on his current path.

Between a B+ and A-.
Hammer appeared to be playing injured most of Jan-March, was avoiding usual physical battles along the boards.
A fearless player on defense, Hammer needs to work on getting his shot throught from the point, even if it is a hard wrist shot. Telegraphs his slapshot too much. It's more important to get it through than to bomb and miss or get it blocked.
He is still on an upward trend, will get better the next few seasons.

B..Maybe he was injured but he didn't play all that well 1st 1/2 of season.

He sprained his ankle during the Jets game early on in the year, before that game he was playing really well. After the injury, he didn't miss ONE GAME and didn't practice for a good amount of time. In a short season it's tough to get some rest and heal the injury.

His biggest problems is always trying to look for sticks in front of the net hoping for a deflection, he needs to just hit the net.

He also got hurt during the lockout while he was playing in Bridgeport. A pretty bad hit from behind, IIRC.

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that his struggles in the first half were a direct result of playing banged up, especially when you look at how impressive he was in the second half/playoffs. His play against Malkin alone IMO was enough to get him into the A's. The punch to Malkin's face could also bump him up from an A- to an A.

A-

I love Hamonic. He is the kind of player that is going to age very well. The 7 year deal he got is fantastic because he earned it from his smart play and his fearlessness. Not his offense or puck moving ability. We know we are getting solid d and strong leadership from him the next 7 years. Everything we hope he can do in addition, will just be a bonus, and make the deal even better because he can still improve at 23 years old. Very little chance at this point he regresses.

He showed that this season, and I look at his "bad" play with the injury as a positive. Shows he is willing to sacrifice to help his team win. The kid has heart, and if I had to rank his impact in regards to our playoff appearance, it would be 3rd behind JT and Nabby. Like I said, he has no fear, and wants to play against the best every night even on a bad ankle. If it wasn't for JT, he could easily be the next Captain. Gave JT an A grade and now Hamonic. That leaves only one more player I feel deserves an A grade...

Agreed completely. Very tough to grade him with the injuries so I thought a B was fair. Obviously can easily have a A+ for the 2nd half. Some was bad luck as well..How many "bad bounce" goals went in off him? Was like 2 or 3 IIRC.
