Goose (Paul Gaustad) appreciation thread

I also remember the somewhat unorthodox fighting tactics. He would try to use his reach to either get his opponents jersey over their face or get himself on the outside to throw punches. He wasn't a fighting heavyweight even at his initial size in the NHL (6'5" 227lbs). Then he lost about 15-20lbs a few years into his career to improve his skating/endurance enough to stay in the league in a role beyond just a 4th liner.. At that point he needed those tactics more and he also lucked out by the fact that the amount of heavyweights has steadily declined since the early days of his career. Just another example of him adapting himself to stay in the league.

I always got the vibe that he reluctantly fought while a Sabre because he was, for the most part the only one capable, on many of those teams.

Loved the guy though. Late 7th rounder to a 13-year career as an everyday NHLer. One of Darcy and Co.'s biggest hits.

I always loved the guy when he was here. Worked hard. I also appreciated that his hard work got the Sabres a 1st when they traded him as well.

Enjoyed how he came out of nowhere to carve out a niche in the NHL, completely a lunch-pail guy. Also funny to think that Schopp hung up on me when I called in to talk about what an amazing playoff run he was having with Portland in 2001. :biglaugh:
