You make a good point. Clearly, the US has plenty of general "sports fans" who are happy to go to an NHL game simply because they might see a fight. No question. My point is that there are pockets in the US where the hockey fans are pretty committed. Boston, Minnesota, Chicago, Michigan, etc. Certainly not comparable to Canada but...

Best way for any immigrant to Canada to become Canadian, whether of Northern European descent or elsewhere as is the case in the article, is to play hockey and get on the ice with people in your neighbourhood.

I don’t have any ill will toward Canada at all, some of the nicest people I’ve met. One of my best friends is Canadian and lives in Dryden, Ontario.

Cmon. Millions of people lost their lives in the Cold War, including hundreds of Canadians.

Sports was used as propaganda. Just like Miracle, 1972 was a unifying patriotic 'feel good' moment. Same for the Soviets had they won. But ultimately it didn't change much of anything on the ground, especially as it pertains to the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Well you can same the same for the shooters. When have they faced a real goalie? It is what it is, he has faced the best the tournament has...

The Czechs outshot Canada. They also beat Russia.

That game could have gone very differently if he hadn't been on his game.

Canada has had unreliable goaltending seemingly more often than not over the past decade or so, I'm certainly not taking it for granted, but he's met every challenge he's faced.

Canada hasn’t surrendered a goal at 5 on 5 all tournament which is just ridiculous, they’ve also never trailed and have looked two steps ahead of every opponent they’ve played. Canada is obviously the favourite but we play the games for a reason.

The US has wayyyy more registered hockey players than the Czech Republic, Russia, Finand, Sweden and others combined. Countries where Hockey is definitely not a niche sport.

There is simply no way that Hockey is a niche sport in the US, you may think of it as such but the reality is there are 24 NHL teams with 20k seat arenas to host them. Its a big business, while it might not be as big as the NFL or MLB or even NBA, I think the stats clearly suggest that Hockey is well past the cutoff of being considered a "niche sport" in the US.

An example of a niche sport in the US would be Vollyball or Squash, not Hockey.
