How come and please explain.
These are still pro hockey players.

The Americans in 1980 were non pro (amateur) college kids vs one of the strongest teams ever assembled in the entire history of the sport.

This was a professional hockey upset, or an unexpected result. 1980 was a literal miracle pulled off by some random part time hockey kids.

There's no need for this.

We had a team that was good enough to win but we got stoned and the Finns put up some timely scoring.

Just congratulate them and move on.

The Finns were missing everyone too.
I sort of did congratulate Canada. Very good tournament considering they could have had an entirely different fire power roster

How come and please explain.
The 1980 Soviet team was an unstoppable juggernaut that was bred to be the best hockey team in the world and was. They had the best goalie in the world. Outside the Super Series in 76 they were undefeated at every level of competition and their roster was largely the same for nearly a decade where this Canada team was mashed together from playoff eliminated NHLers. That Soviet juggernaut was stopped by a group of college hockey players that hadn't played a single game of professional hockey.

What Finland accomplished here was great, but it's not as much of an underdog story as Lake Placid. It's just not.
