Have they always had the bigger sticks? If not, when did they come about?

Going by pictures, looks like sometime in the 1910's.

Percy LeSueur, in a 1910 hockey card:

Looks like a shortened regular stick, maybe slightly wider...almost field hockey-like except for the blade.

Georges Vezina, probably sometime around the end of the decade or the early 20's:

Pretty much the same shape as a modern goalie stick.
