Post-Game Talk: GM 75 | Kraken def. Canucks | 5-0 | Worst Birthday Ever

Tocchet confirming on Sportsnet that Chytil won't play again this season. This is fairly logical. What's the point of risking him in games that no longer mean anything?

As for next season--you'd have to say that at best, he's a longshot to be of much help to the Canucks.

Was watching Hockey Central with very mixed emotions. Happy to see Ottawa and Montreal in good positions to make the playoffs.

And for us, how could one year go as wrong as this one did. It still hurts. Hoping that Demko keeps getting healthy.

Murphy (of Murphys Law fame) once said to Peter (of Peter Principle fame):

You think you have it bad, just thank your lucky stars you aren't a Canucks fan

To which Peter responded:

Jim Benning

Real stranger vibes.

This is reminding me of the tail-end of the 2022-23 season after they fired Boudreau and went on a heater under Tocchet, climbing all the way up to 88 points. Basically losing draft position with every win. But I guess you can't complain--because they landed Wilander at 11th overall that spring.

Sometimes you have to pinch yourself to believe that 2023-24 ever happened.
They had two, 100 point centers, now they don't have one. Boeser had 40 and Hoglander 23-this year not so much.

And of course they went from having a Vezina Trophy goaltender to being forced to sign and play a guy in Lankinen at close to the league minimum. And you add in a 90-point plus d-man like Hughes who won the Norris, and might have again this year, if he hadn't been battling injuries for last 30 games.

That season was like a mirage in the desert. This year it's still shimmering in the distance. But it doesn't feel like the Canucks are much closer. But hope springs eternal. They're now the 5th youngest team in hockey. So there is a runway to improve.

But I guess that's talk for the long off-season.
Well yeah they carried the strong play under Tocchet to finish 2023 into the successful 2023-24. 2023 was a successful season finish which so many fans wrote as nothing more than a new coach bounce and wanted to tank & sell instead.

It wasn't really the same thing as when under Benning's terrible teams a Brandon Sutter would start to light it up to finish the season strong, and while there are bigger hurdles going into next season it's not the same thing now either. Our fanbase is just to traumatized by 8 years of Jim Benning.

i can complain

seven of the ten players taken before willander are clearly better prospects (bedard, carlsson, fantilli, smith, michkov, leonard, dvorsky) and of the other three simashev could be way better but no one has seen him play, reinbacher probably would have been better if he hadn't been derailed by injuries (and could still be better) and danielson is still a very good player that plays a position the canucks desperately need in their system

Stephan Roget writing in the Canucks Army has some sobering truths about your 2024-25 Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks head into tomorrow night's game with Kraken at 26 ROW's on the season, which puts them basically on par with some of the worst teams in the Western Conference. For comparisons sake, tomorrow night's opponents in the Kraken have 25 ROW's. And the likes of Anaheim, Nashville and Utah aren't far behind.

A big part of the problem is that the Canucks OT record of 13 losses is the worst in the NHL--and a big reason why they're going home early. But when you've basically only won 26 times in 74 games.....well even talking about the playoffs seems like a bit of a travesty.

But if you're looking for culprits, you need look no further than the Canucks current crop of forwards. Their leading scorer is EP40 with 45 points. It's quite possible that not a single Canuck forward even cracks the 50-point plateau this season.

And if you throw out Quinn Hughes numbers--it's easily one of the lowest scoring group of forwards in the NHL. And for context, tomorrow night's opponent in the Kraken have outscored Vancouver 224-213...and hardly anyone considers them an offensive juggernaut.

So obviously a lot of work to do in the off-season before this team is even in the playoff discussion again.

The roster construction was flawed from day one. They went in too light on the back end and then the two best forwards being babies + the overall team effort being nonexistent until they made the trade.. that's your season there.

Last season, we could count on a hand the amount of bad efforts they had. Up until the Miller trade, we could count on one hand the amount of good efforts they had. There was like three games where they looked like last year.

They legit just didn't play hard because the vibes were bad and the defense sucked.

A fixed blueline and some improved vibes coincided with an injury ridden team (ep, qh, demko) that is short three top six forwards performance wise... yeah. Just too late to make up ground.. and they had zero margin for error. Even less considering STL has 10 in a row and like 2 reg losses in 20 lol

Sucky season

Slight correction - we have 26 RWs and 31 ROWs.

If we got 6 more wins instead of OT loses to have the same ROWs as the Blues (37) we’d be 2 points back with 2 games in hand. The whole season was lost because we don’t know how to play OT essentially. I think like 6 or 7 of those OT losses we tied it late but couldn’t get the extra point.

Tonight’s Game
  • Kraken have been one of the better offensive teams, statistically and analytically, so need to limited chances
  • Canucks need to play on their toes
Playoff Race
  • Not thinking about how many games they need to win, just win tonight
  • Can’t scoreboard watch because it makes you dejected
  • Blues are playing with confidence throughout their line-up
Line-Up
  • Demko is starting
  • Pretty much the same line-up; was deciding between Mancini and Junior and they like how Junior has been playing; Junior will play tonight
  • Mancini will play in the upcoming back-to-back
Joshua
  • Knows he has to get going; has been a little slow on his reads
  • Still time for him to improve his anticipation this season
Raty
  • Made a couple of mistakes early on but isn’t see those same mistakes as much now
  • His wingers have helped him
  • Is a big thing if he can take defensive zone faceoffs against the other team’s top line
Karlsson
  • Is a “sticky guy”; gets to the net and wins board battles
  • Now looking for consistency and getting to his game every night
  • Thinks he’s a lot stronger on pucks and there’s another level for him to get to
  • Mentions his goal against Columbus as a good element to his game; anticipate where the puck will be coming and get body position; read the play 2 seconds before it happened and took a cross check while still scoring
Final Games of the Season
  • These games are important; everyone is watching how you play in these games
  • Young guys have worked hard and cannot complain about their work effort
