Tomorrow’ Game
  • Have a chance to enter the break on a positive note
  • Big game and should be ready for it
Last Two Games
  • Vegas was a hard fought game; good road game on a back-to-back with a lot of positives
  • Last night was self inflicted
  • Doing a lot of good things right now but need to hurt themselves less with costly mistakes
Canucks’ Slump
  • Only a slump in the sense that they aren’t getting wins
  • Thought they outplayed Vegas early on
  • Gave themselves a chance in extra time
  • Lost in extra time in Utah
His Play Since Returning to the Lineup
  • Thought the three home games before the road trip were really good
  • Played okay against Utah and was skating well in Vegas
  • Says he wasn’t great against Ottawa
  • For his standards has just been okay
  • Tries not to take stock in scoring points
  • Points are harder to come by right now and isn’t driving play on a consistent basis
  • Will just try to have a good game tomorrow
  • Didn’t set high expectations for himself when he first came back but then he “played pretty damn well against Boston and Colorado” so his expectations changed
Shorthanded Goal Against
  • He made a mistake
  • Missed his guy and didn’t even realize his guy was behind him until he turned around; was trying to pick off the first pass
  • Needs to be more focused
  • Overtime goal was also his fault
  • Try not to duplicate mistakes
  • “Shit happens. It’s a long season.”
Miller & Pettersson
  • “You guys, in a sense, the outerworld has created this thing. Like, this isn’t a thing. Am I bothered? No. You guys are just wasting your time.”
  • In response to how sick he is about hearing of the alleged feud: “I don’t care. You guys want to talk about, you guys want to ask me…ask me all you want. I can bring out Petey and we can do the interview together if that would make you guys happy.
  • In response to shutting out the noise: “Listen, I have a lot of stuff to worry about right now from myself. I’m not worried about any noise. The noise is in between my ears and I’m trying to figure out how to play a good 200’ game for the team.”
  • Would be great if “we could get 100 points”; we’re just trying to play the right way and the points will come when they come

Now I’m tempted to ask ChatGPT for a summary of your summary

Kinda crazy how Hughes has a 14 point gap between him and the next player in points on the Canucks when forwards usually have more points overtime.

I don't think there is even another team where their defensemen is leading the points like this

What Hughes is and has been doing reminds me of Atlas.

The weight of the world on his own shoulders, and the dude never flinched, even for a second.

We are simply not worthy.

Before the Christmas Break
  • Looking forward to it; going to be a fun Christmas
  • Need to clean up the odd-man rushes
  • Weren’t there for some key moments
Penalty Kill
  • Has been great
  • Have to stop taking penalties
  • Need to stop taking pressure off themselves; especially early in the game
  • Some guys don’t PK, they sit on the bench, and if there’s a penalty they won’t play for 4 minutes
  • The PK has been there for them
  • Blueger and Suter have a great connection and chemistry on the PK
Hoglander
  • Has never given up on him
  • Trying to find his identity
  • Needs to get back to being a hard forechecking guy
  • When he has the puck needs to make some plays
  • Is not seeing some stuff that he should see; thinks that’s because he’s nervous and doesn’t want to make a mistake
  • This happens to players; happened to Tocchet as well
  • Wants him to have the puck
  • Needs to get towards the net because that’s where he’s good; is playing too much on the outside
  • Compares him to Garland & Sherwood; the other team wants to kill him when he’s on his game
  • Get in the action and be a pain in the butt
Celebrini
  • The kid’s a player
  • Has a bright future ahead of him
  • Treat him like great players on other teams; can’t give him odd-man rushes
  • If you have a chance to go through him then take it; always need to know where he is
  • If you mark that player, make sure you have them and are not puck watching
Miller
  • Players have a lot of different things on their plate
  • As a coach, you want the player to “leave the rink mind free”
  • When you leave the rink thinking too much, it affects your play
  • There’s been some good things; shutdown Mackinnon and Barkov
  • Some things he needs to clean up like his play without the puck and needs to stay focused
  • It’s about the crest and not the individual player
Playing as a Team
  • When you play a good team game, afterwards everyone feels good about themselves
  • They know they need certain guys to score
  • Best players gotta be at their best
  • If those players aren’t at that level on a given night, then everyone has to fall back on the team identity
  • Sometimes they let that team identity slip away
  • Last season, they played to that team identity most nights
  • Have been more sporadic this season
  • When an individual is struggling then you need to do all the little things; changing right, short shifts, if it’s your turn to go to the net then you need to get there
  • Can’t get out of slumps on your own
Hughes
  • Maintenance day
  • Have played every other night and he’s practiced a few times
  • Hughes wants to be on the ice but thinks there are certain times where they need to rest him
Pettersson Drawing Penalties
  • Thinks it’s great
  • He keeps “going to the hole” and moving his feet
  • Sometimes you focus too much on the negative with him and this is a positive
  • He’s drawing penalties because he’s going to the hard areas
Lotto Line
  • Not interested in reuniting it
  • Pettersson has DeBrusk and Garland
  • Doesn’t want to be switching line compositions every 2 seconds
  • They are a 4 line team

I'm not going to panic on the season yet. It wasnt too long ago Rutherford said just about everything has to go right for us to make the playoffs. And yet, this year almost everything that could go wrong has gone wrong and we are 13th in points percentage. The optimist in me hopes this adversity makes us stronger

Had ChatGPT summarize it:

  • Team Performance:
    • Miller reflects on recent games, noting positives despite mixed results. He highlights the team's strong play in a hard-fought game against Vegas and acknowledges costly mistakes in the following game.
    • He emphasizes the importance of staying positive during a slump, focusing on improvement, and minimizing errors.
  • Personal Accountability:
    • Miller admits to specific mistakes he made, including allowing a shorthanded goal and the overtime goal, taking full responsibility for those errors.
    • He evaluates his performance since returning from an absence, acknowledging inconsistency and the challenge of meeting his own high standards.
  • Expectations and Noise:
    • Miller discusses managing expectations after his return, noting that his strong performances against Boston and Colorado raised his own standards.
    • He dismisses external rumors and speculation (e.g., about him and teammate Elias Pettersson), stating that they are a non-issue and don't bother him. He remains focused on improving his game and contributing to the team.
  • Team Goals:
    • Miller stresses the importance of playing the right way and staying focused on team goals, like making the playoffs and building consistency, rather than solely chasing individual points.
Hmm... @Vector thank you for your service but we are going to have to let you go.

I don't think there is even another team where their defensemen is leading the points like this
Back in the 30's in the last century, NHL teams used to employ a 'rover'. His job was to basically skate all over the ice and set up plays.

Welcome to the 2024 Vancouver Canucks. It looks to me that Tocchet has given Hughes basically free reign. If he wants to carry the puck into the offensive zone; or wheel around while his team is forechecking, that's OK with the coach.

And why not? Hughes is such a superior skater he can shake one or even two guys in a heartbeat. He's a nightmare for the winger with the luckless task of containing him at the point. Normally the point is a high danger area for average d-men, but Hughes makes it look easy. He makes guys trying to check him look absolutely foolish at times, as he basically breaks their ankles time after time.

Right now, there's not another player in the league who has a greater impact on his team than Hughes.....not McDavid or Draisaitl; not Matthews; not McKinnon; and not his brother Jack in Jersey. He's simply unique.....and at this point, irreplaceable.
